Women’s Lacrosse Runs Streak to Four In A Row Behind Balanced Attack over Curry

MILTON, Mass. (April 7, 2024) – The Western New England women's lacrosse team ripped off their fourth win in a row on Sunday afternoon, securing a conference victory over the Colonels of Curry College 16-8. Ally Ferraro, Emmy Burns, Mia Celentano, and Lina Eves were heavily involved in the WNE victory.

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears would see their opponent jet out to an early 2-0 lead when Grayon Goolgasian was on the board twice in the opening four minutes of the game to give Curry a 2-0 lead. Scoring would come at the midway point of the first quarter for the Golden Bears, when Ally Ferraro and Lina Eves would score back-to-back goals in a 40-second span to quickly even the score at two. Curry would answer back, not allowing the Golden Bears to take a lead when Casey Conneely would rip a shot into the back of the net to give Curry their lead back. Western New England would respond again, even the score at three when Ferraro got back on the scoreboard in the quarter. Curry would have the final goal of the opening frame, ending the seven-goal fourth quarter by giving the Colonels a 4-3 lead. Western New England took 12 shots in the first quarter, while two saves were made by Riley Franzo.

Melissa Shanteler would win the opening draw control for Western New England in the second quarter, which would lead to a free position goal from Emmy Burns, who fired her first goal of the afternoon into the back of the net to tie the score at four. Curry College would again respond with a goal, not allowing Western New England to take the lead when Goolgasian netted her third goal of the game. The Golden Bears would scamper back for another goal off a caused turnover by Allie Cyr, which ended up becoming a goal for Ferraro, her third of the game, evening the score at five. The Golden Bears came around with their first lead of the game with 8:20 to play in the second quarter when Burns took advantage of a Curry turnover and fired the ball into the net while a player down to give the Golden Bears their first lead of the game, 6-5. That goal would start a streak of five goals in a row by the road team as Mia Celentano, Lina Eves, and Ally Ferraro helped grow WNE's lead to 9-5 with 1:59 to play. The Golden Bears would come away with a three-goal lead at the half, taking nine shots in the second quarter. Both goalies made one save in the second.

Just one goal for each team would be had in the third quarter, as WNE would sub Faith Graveline into the game after the break, make four saves, and hold the Colonels to just one goal in her first 15 minutes of action. Mia Celentano would score Western New England's lone goal in the quarter, while the Golden Bears came away with a 10-7 lead after three quarters of play.

An explosive offensive showing for Western New England in the fourth quarter would secure the Golden Bears their second straight CCC victory and their fourth straight win overall. Early goals from Ally Ferraro and Emmy Burns in the fourth quarter would give the Golden Bears their largest lead of the contest, taking a 12-7 lead. While the Colonels would get one goal back, Western New England would end the game with the final four goals. Emmy Burns, Ally Ferraro, Ella Henry, and Lyndsey Bunnell would all find the back of the net for the blue and gold, who outshot Curry 16-1 in the final frame and 26-7 in the second half. Graveline was not forced to make a save in the fourth quarter, as the Golden Bear would cruise to a 16-8 win on Sunday afternoon in conference play.

Inside the Lines:
  • Ally Ferraro collected eight points in the win for the Golden Bears, coming away with six goals and two assists, good for eight total points in the win. The senior took 16 shots in the game, ripping ten shots on goal while coming away with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Emmy Burns put together four goals for the Golden Bears, while Mia Celentano and Lina Eves both found two goals on the day.
  • The Golden Bears came away with 14 caused turnovers, led by Mia Celentano, who collected five.
  • Riley Franzo picked up the win for the Golden Bears, grabbing three saves, while Faith Graveline made four saves in relief.
  • WNE outshot Curry 47-17 in the game. Curry was 10/28 on clear attempts in the loss and turned the ball over 28 times.
