SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 4, 2024) – The Western New England baseball team, aided by their five runs in the seventh inning of game two, split the doubleheader with the Hawks of Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon, finishing the regular season with a 20-18 record.

How it Happened (Game 1):
A pitcher's duel would open the first three innings of the game as
Jared Kuryan for the Golden Bears and Louie Mosca would go toe-to-toe, pitch for pitch. The Hawks would collect the only three hits through the first three innings of the game, though the Golden Bears defense would play a key role in keeping Roger Williams off the scoreboard early. Western New England would find their offense in the bottom of the fourth inning and take the early 1-0 lead because of it.
Jack Loftus would record a single with one out in the inning, followed by a double to right field by
Ryan Montini, putting runners on second and third with still one out.
Andrew Florek would deliver a single to first base and would beat out the tag of the base, grabbing an RBI in the process, giving Western New England a 1-0 lead after four innings.
The Hawks would threaten off
Kuryan in the top of the fifth inning, though the hard-throwing righty would get his final out of the inning on a ground ball to first base. The Madison, Connecticut, native went the first five innings for the Golden Bears, giving up just four hits and no runs while striking out five Hawks. From there, Western New England would faulter, seeing the Hawks roar back in the seventh inning to take their first lead of the game.
Roger Williams would put up six runs on five hits off relief pitcher
Cam Heeman, who struggled to record an out in the seventh inning as the Hawks would collect a big RBI triple in the inning from their top hitter, Jack Morin, while Ty Cali finished the inning with a single to left center and an RBI, giving RWU a 6-1 lead. Western New England would threaten in the bottom of the seventh after
Aaron Cole led off the inning with a walk, and
Sean Jamieson would shortly double, though the Golden Bears would be sat down by RWU's JT Gunzy, leaving two on base to end the inning.
The Hawks added one more run in the top of the ninth inning when Owen Hibbard grabbed a single to center field. Roger Williams collected three hits in the inning off Cannon Marshall, coming away with a six-run lead. Gunzy would close out the game for RWU in the ninth, sending Roger Williams to a 7-1 victory over the Golden Bears.
Inside the Diamond:
- Western New England collected just five hits in game one as a team and left 11 runners on base in the loss. WNE also struck out 11 times.
- Andrew Florek came around with the lone RBI for Western New England.
- Jared Kuryan put together five solid innings, giving up just four hits and no walks while striking out five.
- The WNE bullpen, consisting of Cam Heeman, Alex Slezak, and Canon Marshall, gave up nine hits to the Hawks and all seven runs.
- RWU's JT Gunzy earned the win, going the final five innings, giving up one hit while striking out five.
- With the win, RWU locked up the two seed in the CCC Tournament, while Western New England will take the five seed.
How it Happened (Game 2):
Matt Lauria got the Hawks out of the top of the first in style, getting the visitors in order. The Golden Bears would reward
Lauria's excellent start with three runs in the bottom of the second to go ahead early.
Andrew Florek would double down the left field line and advance on a failed pick-off attempt by the RWU starter, Lucas Lariviere, while
Henry Schowerer would ground out though secure an RBI, giving WNE a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, after
Aaron Cole and
Trey Young would both single,
Kohtaro Shimada would blast a double down the left field line to score one, giving Western New England a 2-0 lead.
Paul Villecco would induce a ground ball out that would score WNE's third run of the inning, giving the blue and gold the 3-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Hawks would get their bats going in the top of the fourth and would collect two hits off
Lauria and score two runs on one swing of the bat when Ethan Kenney recorded a single into center field with the bases loaded, getting the Hawks right back into the thick of things, trailing by just a run after four innings of work.
Lauria would go the first four innings for the Golden Bears, giving up just those two hits and two runs while walking two and striking out four. Roger Williams would come away with two more runs in the top of the fifth off
Lucas Kamoen, as Jack Morin would strike again, this time in game two, while Chris Faraca would put the Hawks in front with an RBI single, giving Roger Williams a 4-3 lead.
The Hawks would scratch and claw for more runs in the top of the sixth, getting two hits while filling the bases with just one out, though
Greg Nivison would shut the door, getting a pop-out and a strikeout to end the inning. The Golden Bears would come around and take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning after a leadoff walk to
Paul Villecco.
Ryan Montini would single up the middle, putting runners at the corners with no outs.
John Bova would slam a double down the left field line, which scored two runners, giving WNE a 5-4 lead. The Golden Bears were not done from there, as
Sean Jamieson would single on a bunt to third base, and again, runners would be at the corners with one out, brining up
Henry Schowerer. The senior would blast his third home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field, giving the Golden Bears an 8-4 lead after seven innings.
Troy Donohue set the Hawks down in order in the top of the eighth inning, while Western New England's offense would continue to dominate Hawks pitching, scoring four more times in the bottom of the eighth.
Bova would deliver his second two RBI hit of the game, coming away with a single through the left side of the diamond, giving the Golden Bears a 10-4 lead. Florek and Schowerer would both collect RBIs, Florek's coming on an RBI single, while Schowerer nabbed his second extra base of the game, this time a double, giving the Golden Bears a 12-4 lead. Donohue would again set Roger Williams down in order, this time to close the game, giving Western New England a 12-4 victory to close the regular season.
Inside the Diamond:
- A pair of Golden Bears led Western New England to victory in game two. Henry Schowerer collected two hits, both extra base hits, coming away with five RBIs in the win. John Bova grabbed two hits and four RBIs, as the two combined for nine of the 12 RBIs in the win.
- Ryan Montini and Andrew Florek both recorded two hit afternoons for the Golden Bears.
- Roger Williams left nine runners on base while striking out nine times in the loss.
- Troy Donohue finished off the final 2.1 innings for Western New England, earning the win by giving up no hits, runs, or walks while striking out one.
