How it Happened:
Coming off a tough loss to top-seeded Endicott, the Golden Bears looked to hold off elimination from the CCC Tournament on Thursday afternoon, playing a familiar Nichols College team, a team Western New England had just defeated less than 48 hours ago 24-6. The Golden Bears got off to a similar start in the top of the first inning, as they did in the opening-round game, hosted by Nichols.
Paul Villecco opened the game with a single to left field, while
John Bova was walked with one out in the inning, putting runners on first and second.
Cody Waterbury would deliver an RBI to left center field, giving the Golden Bears the early edge.
Jack Loftus would keep the inning alive in a big way, sending a three-run home run to left center field, scoring three more runs for the Golden Bears, and adding to the score, which made Western New England's lead 4-0.
Jared Kuryan would be masterful all afternoon long, getting the top three hitters in the Bison lineup in order to end the first inning quickly.
The Golden Bears added two more runs in the top of the second inning after
Henry Schowerer tripled to right center field to open the inning. The senior would later score on a wild pitch, putting the Golden Bears ahead 5-0. With two outs in the inning,
Bova would collect his fourth home run of the season, this time to left field, adding another run to the Golden Bears lead and taking a 6-0 advantage. Nichols would get their first hit off
Kuryan in the bottom of the second inning, a two-run home run that brought the Bison back within four runs of the Golden Bears. Neither team would come around to score in the third or fourth inning, keeping Western New England's lead at four.
Back-to-back walks for Nichols pitching in the top of the fifth could cost them one more run for the Golden Bears, as
Henry Schowerer would add his first RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly, giving WNE a 7-2 lead. Western New England's senior starter would continue to shut down the Bison, who notched just two hits through the middle innings while leaving three on base.
The Golden Bears would be held scoreless until the top of the eighth inning, when Western New England baseball would put the game away, scoring five times on four hits while taking advantage of one Nichols error. In the inning,
Ryan Montini would lead off with a walk while
John Bova would be hit with a pitch, putting runners on first and second with no outs.
Sean Jamieson would contribute three RBIs for Western New England on one swing of the bat, socking a home run to right field, giving the Golden Bears a 10-2 lead. The inning would not end there, as
Cody Waterbury and
Jack Loftus both recorded singles, while
Kohtaro Shimada would advance the two runners home on a two-run double down the left field line that gave Western New England a 12-2 lead.
Jared Kuryan would go the distance for the Golden Bears, giving up one final hit in the game and another two-run home run to the Bison, though it would not be enough as the senior starter would guide the Golden Bears to a 12-4 victory, pushing off elimination and advancing to day three of the CCC baseball tournament.
