Records:
- Western New England: 1-0-0 (0-0-0)
- Farmingdale State College: 0-1-0 (0-0-0)
How it Happened:
The game began with Molly McLaughlin in net for the Golden Bears and Kelsie Feingold opposing McLaughlin across the field in the net for the Rams. Immediately, the Rams pressured the Golden Bears. Abigail Chest made McLaughlin make a save 1:33 into the game. Then, Alyse Rivera found Rachel McAuliff, who was able to send the ball past McLaughlin to give the Rams the 1-0 lead after 1:54 played in the game. The Golden Bears would not shy away after finding themselves down one early. Keara Conroy had a shot blocked. Then, Liza Pinette had a shot saved by Feingold. Farmingdale State responded with a shot that went high of the net. Rivera made McLaughlin make a save in the 15th minute. However, then the Golden Bears would generate momentum. It started with the Golden Bear offense forcing a corner kick. Then, in the 29th minute, Liza Pinette found Lindsay Reidy, who sent the ball into the back of the net. That tied the game at one and turned the momentum completely in favor of the Golden Bears. Reidy had another shot on net just over a minute later, but Feingold saved it. WNE then had a shot go wide of the net shortly after that. The ball went back and forth after that, with both teams trying to make a move and get the next goal. However, neither team could get another shot before the end of the half, and the score was tied 1-1 going into the second half. The first-half stats showed WNE leading in shots 5-4 and fouls 8-3. Both the saves and corner kick stats were tied 2-2 between the Golden Bears and Rams.
After the halftime break, the Golden Bears came out hungry to get that second goal. They had two quick shots within the first three minutes of the second half. However, neither made Feingold make a save. WNE would then have two consecutive corner kicks. The second corner kick led to Lindsay Reidy getting a shot on goal, which Feingold saved originally. However, Reidy stayed with the ball and sent a second shot at the net, which found the back of the net in the 57th minute of the game. The Golden Bears had a 2-1 lead. The Golden Bears did not stop pressuring the Rams after the goal, though. Isabella Montalvo made Feingold make a save. The ball went back and forth for around 17 minutes. The Golden Bears kept pressuring the Rams, looking to extend their lead. However, the Rams would not let up going for the equalizing goal. Gabby Sansone had a shot in the 79th minute, which Feingold made a save on. Farmingdale State tried to find an opening in the Golden Bear defense to possibly get another goal. However, the defense stood strong and kept the Rams from getting a shot on goal for the entire second half. The clock would hit zero in the second half and mark the end of the intense game. The final stats showed the Golden Bears leading in total shots 11-4, shots on goal 7-3, corner kicks 5-2, and fouls 9-5. The Rams led in saves 5-2. The Golden Bears won their first game of the season 2-1.
WNE head coach Kristin Hensinger was asked for a comment after the game. "We got off to a shaky start, but settled in nicely. I'm proud of the resiliency they (WNE) showed in overcoming the early deficit. It was a total team effort and we look forward to tomorrow against another strong opponent," Hensinger stated.
Leading goal-scorer from Friday night, Lindsay Reidy, was also asked to comment on the two-goal performance. "I think we played really well. It was a great way to start the season. Farmingdale was a strong opponent, and it was a really good way to set the tone for hopefully a successful season," Reidy commented.
