SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 13, 2024) – The Western New England women's tennis team picked up their second victory of the season on Friday afternoon in their home opener, defeating Vermont State University Johnson by a final score of 7-0. WNE nearly swept away the Badgers in singles action while taking down VTSU Johnson handily in doubles to claim the victory.

How It Happened:
The Golden Bears got off to a great start in singles action, as all singles players for Western New England would come around with victories.
Emma Miller took the top spot win for WNE with a resounding 6-0, 6-0 win.
Catie Seklecki followed suit with straight set victories, 6-0, 6-0 in the second singles position. The Golden Bears continued their wins in the third and fourth spots as
Sydney Shepard and
Gabrielle Tirkot also picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Gianna Arace would also come away with a win for the Golden Bears, grabbing a 6-1, 6-0 victory over VTSU's Nikki Sweet, continuing the win streak for the Golden Bears.
Yasmine Giacalone wrapped up the final singles win for the Golden Bears in the sixth singles spot, sweeping Caitlyn Morey, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, the duo of
Catie Seklecki and
Sydney Shepard got the Golden Bears on a role in the top spot, picking up a 6-1 victory. Right behind the top spot were
Emma Miller and
Gianna Arace, who grabbed a 6-1 victory in the second doubles spot. Western New England would finish the sweep with a 6-0 victory in the third doubles spot by
Kelsey Wyse and
Gabrielle Tirkot, finishing the match in favor of the Golden Bears, defeating Vermont State University Johnson by a final score of 7-0.

- When asked about the upcoming string of conference matches that await WNE, Head Coach Patrick Roche quote "Conference play will be our real test. We have a couple of injuries right now, some of our players will have to step up to keep our momentum going."
