WNE Battles to Scoreless Result with Roger Williams

Springfield, Mass. (September 21, 2024) – WNE hosted the Roger Williams University Hawks in their first CNE showdown of the season. The teams would battle throughout the entire game. Both teams saw opportunities arise, but neither could capitalize, and the teams settled for a 0-0 result.

Records:

  • Western New England: 4-0-4 (0-0-1)
  • Roger Williams University: 5-2-1 (0-0-1)

How it Happened:

The game began with Coco Marrelli in net for the Hawks and Molly McLaughlin in goal for the Golden Bears. The Hawks would start the game with more possession and momentum. However, it was the Golden Bears and Keara Conroy who had the first shot. It was saved by Marrelli in the 9th minute. Both teams would battle throughout the opening minutes of the game. The Golden Bears started to switch the momentum and gain more possession in the 18th minute. However, it did not matter who gained more possession of the ball; neither team could test the opposing goalkeeper much. RWU had a shot in the 24th minute go wide of the net. That would be the final shot of the half. Both teams' defenses did a great job of stifling any opportunities from the opposing offense. The first-half stats saw both teams with one shot. The Golden Bears led 1-0 in shots on goal. Both teams had one corner kick, and RWU led in saves 1-0 and fouls 7-4.

The second half began with the Golden Bears moving the ball down the field. They gained possession and more momentum as the half went on. They had an opportunity as the Golden Bears found an opening in the Hawks' defense, and as they ran into the box, the Hawks' goalie ran out to make the save. However, it would be passed back to Liza Pinette. Pinette took the shot with the goalie not in goal. However, it was saved by the defense in the 60th minute. Then, a shot whistled wide left. Lindsay Reidy had a shot saved by Marrelli in the 62nd minute. Then, RWU would answer with a Sarah Baptista shot that McLaughlin saved in the 63rd minute. The game was intensifying and WNE had two more shots after that, which both went wide left of the goal. The teams battled and kept looking for the opening goal, which would hopefully be the game-winning goal. Neither defense would budge. After a corner kick for both teams, neither team would find another shot or major opportunity, and the game would end with the teams locked at 0-0. The final stats for the game showed the Golden Bears lead 6-2 in shots, 3-1 in shots on goal, and 3-2 in corner kicks. The Hawks led in saves 3-1, and both teams finished with ten fouls each.
