PROVIDENCE, R.I. (January 26, 2025) – The Western New England matched up at the NEWA Duals on Sunday as the seventh seed out 16 teams in the tournament. The Golden Bears earned a victory to open the day before falling to VTSU Castleton and Wesleyan University though was victorious in the 7
th/8
th place match over Worcester Polytechnic Institute, coming away with a seventh place finish in total at the event.
How it Happened (vs. No. 10 Trinity College (Conn.))
The Golden Bears would fall in the first four matches of the morning in four different results. A decision at 125, a major decision at 133, and technical fall at 141, and a fall at 149 would quickly put the Golden Bears down 18-0 in the match. From there, it would be all Golden Bears as seventh seeded Western New England would roar back with vengeance, starting at the 157 lb. weight class when
Colin Carlin got the Golden Bears on the scoreboard with a win over Trinity's Andrew Platt on a 10-5 decision, picking up three points for WNE, their first three of the morning.
David Lisk would pick up the major decision win at 165, 13-2 for Western New England, adding four more points to WNE's total.
Cameron Hines would have no problem with Tucker Vician, earning an 11-0 victory at 174, coming on a major decision. Western New England's win streak would continue at 184 as
Jaylen Hawkins would continue his dominance on the mat, carrying over from last weekend's Will Abele Invitational, taking a major decision win over Nicholas Crotty, earning WNE four more points.
Charles Maloy would be next up for the Golden Bears in the 197 lb. weight class and would earn a dominant major decision win 16-2 over Trinity's Booker Lester Jr., which would put Western New England in front 19-18 in the match as the match would come down to the final bout, the 285 lb. weight class, as WNE starter
Spencer Dickinson would earn a major decision win 12-4 for WNE over Emre Sensoy, earning Western New England four points in the bout and gave WNE the 23-18 victory over Trinity overall to move on in the championships bracket of the NEWA Duals.

Castleton would have Western New England's number right from the start of the 125 lb. weight class and would take down Western New England by a final score of 48-0. The Spartans would win the first nine matches overall before the Golden Bears would forfeit the heavyweight weight class, dropping the match to Castleton by a final score of 48-0.

Similar to Castleton in the second match of the day for the Golden Bears, Wesleyan jumped out to a quick start and never looked back defeating Western New England 37-6 to get themselves into the fifth/sixth place match while the Golden Bears would fall to the 7
th/8
th place match on the day.
Cameron Hines and
Jaylen Hawkins would churn out victories for the Golden Bears in the match with Wesleyan, Hines at 174 with a 6-3 decision win and Hawkins at 184, also picking up a decision victory, 20-14. Western New England would fall to the 7
th/8
th place match for their final match of the day, taking on eighth seeded Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

In the 7/8 matchup, the final bout of the day for the Golden Bears at the NEWA duals, WPI would open with the first two wins, taking 125 and 133. The Golden Bears would turn it around at 141 as
Ayden Cheng earned the decision win 7-2 to get the Golden Bears on the board.
Peter Charnley earned his first victory of the day in the 149 lb. weight class, picking up 6-1 decision win. WNE continued their winning at 157 as
Colin Carlin earned a major decision victory 12-2 for Western New England.
David Lisk would pick up a win for Western New England in the 165 lb. weight class, picking up a major decision win by a 12-3 count, as WNE took a 14-7 lead in the match overall. Another major decision was on the board for Western New England at 174 as
Cameron Hines came around with a 12-2 victory, earning WNE four more points to their total.
Jaylen Hawkins would continue to stay hot on the mat on the day, earning a win in his final match of the day with a major decision victory over Ethan Edmondson, picking up a 13-3 victory, WNE's sixth straight victory over WPI. The major decisions victories kept falling for the Golden Bears as
Charles Maloy picked up one of his own at the 197 lb. weight class for WNE which would secure the victory in the match for the Golden Bears as Maloy
earned an 11-2 win.
Spencer Dickinson capped off the match for the Golden Bears with a 9-3 victory at 285, as WNE came up with a 29-7 victory over WPI and a seventh-place finish at the event.
