Golden Bears Welcome Back Alumni With 28-21 Victory over Roger Williams

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 31, 2025) – The Western New England men's wrestling team honored and welcomed back their program alumni from past seasons on Friday night while also defeating the Hawks of Roger Williams University on the mat by a final score of 28-21 in dual action, improving to 10-4 in duals this season.

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears got out in front in the 125 lb. weight class when Beniamino Dicocco came away with the first six points of the match, grabbing a fall victory in 4:30 over RWU's Dan Hickey. Western New England wouldn't hold that lead long as Trey Kaupp would pick up a fall victory in the 133 lb. weight class over WNE to come up with the next six points of the match for RWU. Austin Monteiro would battle in the 141 lb. weight class and would earn three points as the match would go the distance for the WNE junior, who took down Gavin McKenna on a 5-0 decision. James Linder grabbed a massive 23-8 technical fall decision in the 149 lb. weight class, which earned the Golden Bears five total points. Back-to-back wins at 165 and 174 would aid Western New England in the win as David Lisk would add to his win total on the season with a major decision victory, 13-5, while Cameron Hines picked up a fall victory in 4:47, adding six more points for the Golden Bears to their total, who led 24-9 after seven matches. Roger Williams grabbed a fall victory in the 184 lb. weight class, as did Jayden Toppan in the 285 lb. weight class for RWU. Western New England needed the victory in the 197 lb. weight class, which they got from Aidan DeLuca, who grabbed a major decision victory 11-3 over Michael Toppan to win the match by a final score of 28-21.
With the win, Western New England improved to 10-4 on the season and is now 6-1 at the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center.
