Golden Bears Dominate Curry In CNE Sweep, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 18, 2025) – The Western New England women's volleyball team put together a sweep of the hosting Colonels of Curry College on Saturday afternoon on the road behind a .253 attack percentage and just 13 errors in three sets, coming away with a 3-0 win.

Records:
  • Western New England: 9-13, 2-3 CNE
  • Curry College: 5-13, 0-5 CNE
How it Happened:

First Set:
  • Curry had the upper hand in the opening set through the first 13 points, starting out with an early 8-5 lead before WNE's first of many runs in the match began. Five straight points, including a kill from Morgan Bonin and an ace from Madison Stauss gave the blue and gold a 10-8 lead.
  • The Colonels quickly came back with a short run of their own, putting together three of the next four points to regain the lead, taking it 13-12. From there WNE took over the first set, dropping in 13 of 15 points to close out the set in their favor. On the big run, Western New England notched three straight service aces from outstanding first-year Charlei Henkel, who also had a pair of kills in the set. Rachel Critz's service brought WNE the final five points, picking up a pair of aces while Adrionne Sharp had the final kill and block of the frame, giving WNE a 25-15 win, leading 1-0 in the match.
  • The Golden Bears put down 11 kills on 29 attacking, hitting .241 from the floor. Curry had a manageable eight kills and hit .115 but were doomed on WNE's six service aces in the opening set.
Second Set:
  • Curry looked to bounce back in the second set but the Golden Bears did not let the Colonels' lead get too unmanageable, as Curry opened with four or the first six points before the Golden Bears grabbed the lead back with a pair of Curry errors, leading 9-7 early on in the set.
  • With WNE leading 13-10, the blue and gold went on a run of seven of eight points to take over the set, leading 18-10. Charlei Henkel and Deana Baez dropped home kills for the blue and gold while the Colonels were taken aback by their unforced errors.
  • The two teams traded nearly every point for point down to the end of the set which saw WNE come out with a 25-16 victory, leading 2-0 in the match. The blue and gold dropped in ten kills and hit .240 from the floor while Curry produced eight attacking errors and hit under .000 for the set.
Third Set:
  • WNE put away the Colonels right from the get-go of the third set and never looked back, sweeping the match 3-0. Curry picked up a point to open the match on a service error and then tied the match at two following a kill from Kyla Martin. From there, Western New England put up the next 11 points in a row, including five kills, two from Critz, two from Henkel, and another from Baez, giving the Golden Bears a 13-2 lead.
  • Curry had fight left in them, scoring six of the next eight points as they aimed to get back into the match, trailing then 15-8. The Golden Bears did not allow Curry anywhere close to a tie following, ripping off nine of the final 11 points of the match, coming away with a 25-11 third set victory and a 3-0 match win.
  • WNE picked up 12 kills in the set, a match-high, hitting .280 for the set. Curry managed four kills and four errors, not enough to defeat WNE.
Inside the Lines:
  • Charlei Henkel led Western New England with eight kills and four service aces in the match.
  • Morgan Bonin dropped seven kills for the blue and gold.
  • As a team, Western New England picked up ten service aces while Curry had just one. Deana Baez led WNE in set assists with 18 while Madison Stauss (7) and Evelyn Taylor (5) both contributed.
  • The Golden Bears remain perfect all-time against the Colonels, 14-0. WNE hasn't dropped a set to Curry since 2018.
