Scaglione Makes 39 Saves In Season Debut, Golden Bears Fall At Salve Regina, 4-0

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (November 22, 2025) – The Western New England men's ice hockey team was shut out on Saturday night at the hands of the Seahawks of Salve Regina University, falling in non-conference action by a final score of 4-0. Luca Scaglione made 39 saves between the pipes for WNE in the losing effort.

Records:
  • Western New England: 0-6
  • Salve Regina University: 5-0
How it Happened:

First Period:
  • Western New England picked up three quick shots in the opening minute and a half of the game when Philippe Longchamps, Everest Schneider, and Brayden Patricia all had attempts, but only one was placed on goal, seeing Salve's Selby Warren come up with a save. Salve scored a goal just 3:21 into the game when Aidan Connolly scored for the fourth time this season on an assist from Caden DeStefani, giving Salve Regina a 1-0 lead.
  • WNE's next shot on goal wasn't until the eight-minute mark of the period, when Gavin Mastrodonato had a shot on goal, turned aside by Warren.  Luca Scaglione, who made the start on Saturday for the first time this season, kept Western New England in the game with multiple first-period saves.
  • The Golden Bears' best scoring chances came on the power play with under seven minutes remaining in the period when the blue and gold had a five-on-three chance but could not hit the target as Salve walked away with a 1-0 opening period lead. Scaglione made ten saves in the opening period while WNE took just five shots on goal.
Second Period:
  • Salve Regina had much of the offensive play in the second period, leading to a pair of goals, coming two minutes apart from each other, giving the home team a 3-0 lead. Matthew Brunton scored his fourth of the season on an assist from Aidan Coupe and Karsten Kruska to give the home team a 3-0 lead while Connolly's unassisted goal two minutes later put Salve ahead 3-0 for Connolly's second tally of the night.
  • Billy VanSumeren and Michael Bottrell had chances on goal for Western New England following the goals from Salve Regina, but the Seahawk defense was too much for the Golden Bears in the period, seeing Salve take a 3-0 lead out of the second period.
  • Scaglione made 14 saves in the second period on 16 shots on goal while the Golden Bears had nine chances on goal, all saved by Selby Warren.
Third Period:
  • Chasing three goals, Beau Helmeczi had the first shot on goal in the period for WNE three minutes in, but the fourth and final goal for Salve Regina came shortly after when Cade DeStefani fired home his third of the season on assists from Bradley Farrell and Jack Arizo, giving the Seahawks a 4-0 lead 5:46 into the third period.
  • Needing offense, the Golden Bears responded with four straight shots, a pair from Nick Theodos, another from Bottrell, and one from Kyle Garland, but the WNE offense couldn't find any twine.
  • WNE had a late power play chance, which did not produce any shots on goal, seeing the blue and gold fall by a final score of 4-0 on Saturday evening.
Inside the Lines:
  • Luca Scaglione made 39 saves to lead the Golden Bears. Scaglione made his first start of the season on Saturday.
  • A trio of Golden Bears recorded three shots each in the game, including Nick Theodos, Brayden Patricia, and Stepan Kuznetsov. The blue and gold produced 20 shots on goal overall.
  • WNE won 31 of 69 faceoffs taken on Saturday.
