Women’s Wrestling’s Teneva, Women’s Swimming’s Young Named Golden Bear Athletes of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (November 24, 2025) – Western New England women's wrestling's Tanya Teneva and women's swimming's Olivia Young have earned Golden Bear Athletes of the Week this week after their performances this past weekend, leading their teams to great success.

Tanya Teneva went a perfect 7-0 on the mat at the East Stroudsburg University Duals this past Sunday, earning dominant wins for the Golden Bears, who won four matches overall out of seven. Teneva opened the day with a technical fall victory, 12-0 in just 0:51 against one of Canada's top women's wrestling programs, Brock University. In Western New England's first win of the afternoon, Teneva defeated Adrian College's Angelica Steffy via fall in 1:33. Against Lock Haven University, Teneva won the 138 lb. weight class with another TF win, this time, a 10-0 win in 1:47. Against a dominant East Stroudsburg University squad, Teneva defeated Ragan Retell via TF, 11-0, in 2:10 to earn the Golden Bears a win in the weight class. The final three matches of the day, Felician University, Marymount University, and Elmira College, all wins for the Golden Bears, were also all wins for Teneva, who put up two more technical fall wins and a fall victory to sweep the day in the weight class, going a perfect 7-0 on the mat and improved to an impressive 13-2 overall this season.

Women's Swimming's Olivia Young had a brilliant meet for the Golden Bears at Clark University, with Rhode Island College and Husson University. Young opened the meet by helping the Golden Bears to a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming her portion of the race in 27.15, while the team finished in 1:58.56, just under two seconds off the top time. Individually, Young swam the 50-yard freestyle in 27.66, taking sixth place for the Golden Bears in the event out of 12 swimmers overall. The 100-yard freestyle race saw the Western New England first-year pick up a 1:01.20 time, which was fifth best overall out of 12 in the race and was a season-best time by over two seconds. Young finished out the afternoon in the 400-yard freestyle relay, swimming her portion in 1:00.62, second-fastest on the team, leading the blue and gold to a third-place finish out of eight teams in the event.

The Western New England women's wrestling team returns to the mat on Saturday, December 6, at 9:00 AM at The New Standard Invitational, hosted by York College of Pennsylvania.
