PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 14, 2025) – Western New England men's wrestling senior
Cameron Hines picked up one win at the NCAA Championships on Friday but dropped two matches to see his season come to an end, ending the year with an outstanding 27-6 overall record, the most wins by a Golden Bears this year.
Hines would battle Nathan Lackman of Alvernia University in the first round of the 174 lb. weight class championship bracket and would be dropped on a major decision 18-4. Lackman would earn three takedowns in the first period while Hines would pick up two escapes to trail 9-2 after the first period of play. Lackman picked up three more points in period two while Hines earned an escape point, trailing 13-3. In the final two minutes of the match, Hines would pick up one final escape point, but it would not be enough to defeat the former national champion in Lackman, falling short, 18-4.
In the first round of the wrestle backs, Hines would match with Nick Rogers of Springfield College for the second time this season, and would get another win over Rogers, this time on a 5-3 decision. After no scoring in the first period of the match, Rogers earned the first point after choosing to start on the bottom in the period and picked up an escape point. Hones would take a takedown with 1:14 remaining in the second to take a 3-1 lead before Rogers would get the escape at the end of the period, seeing the close match move to the final period with Hines leading 3-2. In the third period, Hines needed just 24 seconds to make a move, selecting bottom to start the third period and would come up with a reversal, adding two points to hit the total to take a 5-2 lead. Rogers picked up an escape with 32 seconds left but that would be all for the match as Hines picked up the 5-3 win over Nick Rogers, coming away with the win.
Hines would wrestle one more time in the championship event but would fall to Adam Myers of Ohio Northern University by a major decision, 8-0. In the first period, Meyers earned a takedown that Hines would not be able to get out of, taking a 3-0 lead. No scoring would happen in the second period while Myers picked up an escape point and a take down in the third period while adding a riding time point in the final second to come up with the 8-0 win over Hines, which would end the season for Hines and WNE men's wrestling.
The outstanding season for Hines brought him the champion of Region I in the 174 lb. weight class while winning a match in the NCAA Championships. As a team, WNE men's wrestling earned a 13-5 record in duals on the season while Hines had 27 total wins on the year, the most on the team.
