Hawks Best WNE Baseball In CNE Slugfest, 12-11

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (March 25, 2025) – The Western New England baseball team was taken down in Conference of New England play for the first time in program history at the hands of the Hawks of the University of Hartford as the Hawks as the Golden Bears would blow an early 5-0 lead and see Hartford walk-off in the bottom of the ninth to stun WNE on Tuesday afternoon.

Records:
  • Western New England: 8-6, 1-2 CNE
  • University of Hartford: 9-9, 1-0 CNE
How it Happened:

The first four batters of the game reached for the Golden Bears in the top of the first inning while an early offensive spark would quickly give the blue and gold a 5-0 lead after the first three outs of play. Andrew Florek drew a leadoff walk while John Bova smoked a double to left field, putting runners quickly on second and third with no outs. Ryan Montini would deliver on the next at-bat with a two-RBI single to right field, giving WNE a 2-0 lead. The Golden Bears were not done there as Leo Paragarino continued his hot streak with an RBI single to center field, giving the Golden Bears another run, and taking a 3-0 lead. Tyler Kornacki would then double to score two more for Western New England, who took a 5-0 lead after the top of the first. Jacob Hobart would make the start for the blue and gold and would get roughed up early as Hartford would come back quickly on their home turf, scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning, getting a three-run home run, and a solo shot, getting quickly back within one run after one inning of play.

WNE would get those three runs back in the top of the second inning as the offense stayed hot. Trey Young singled through the right side of the diamond which scored Ryan Montini, who reached on a walk to begin the inning. Leo Paragarino picked up his second RBI of the game, this time grounding out with just one out in the inning while Tyler Kornacki collected another RBI himself with a single, giving the Golden Bears an 8-4 lead. Hartford would answer for two runs in the bottom of the second inning, picking up a sacrifice fly and ground out to score runs, getting Western New England's lead down to two after two innings of play. The Golden Bears added two hits in the top of the third but would go down without a run, leaving both runners on base. Hartford would launch their third home run of the game in the bottom of the inning, all coming off Hobart, this time, a two-run shot to even the score at eight.

The Hawks would storm back after being down by five runs twice and would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch by WNE's Connor Flynn and another sacrifice fly to lead 10-8. Flynn would hold down the rest of the inning for Western New England to keep them within two after four innings. WNE responded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to grab their lead back. Antonio Galizia would double to lead off the inning while Andrew Florek picked up an RBI single, getting the Golden Bears back within one. Ryan Montini would continue to hit for Western New England, this time, sending his first home run of the season and sixth career over the fences, giving the Golden Bears an 11-10 lead. WNE would get their first one-two-three inning of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Flynn settled into the game nicely. Hartford would score once more in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 11 after Western New England would go down in order for the first time in the top of the seventh. Neither team could generate much in the eighth inning as Troy Donohue would relieve Flynn and get three ground outs. WNE would again go down quietly in the top of the ninth while Hartford would not. The Hawks led off the ninth with a base runner after Donohue would plunk Hartford's Boardman. Boardman would make it to second following a sacrifice bunt and a single down the left field line from pinch hitter Nico Gigiola would win the game for the Hawks, a walk-off 12-11 victory over the Golden Bears.
