Newcomers Provide Sunday Spark, Golden Bears Take Down Rivier In Seven, 12-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 30, 2025) – The Western New England baseball team was aided by their newcomers in Sunday's non-conference game against the Raiders of Rivier University as Connor Flynn, Connor Slifer, Leo Paragarino, and Connor Cowern all had a hand in the 12-2 victory from Trelease Park.

Records:
  • Western New England: 11-8
  • Rivier University: 6-11
How it Happened:

The top of the first inning would see the Raiders come up with an early 2-0 lead off WNE starter Connor Flynn, who gave up two hits in the inning, with one adding an RBI to it that helped the Raiders jet out to a quick 2-0 lead in the game. The Golden Bears quickly cut the Raiders lead in half in the bottom of the first inning, seeing Canon Marshall, the WNE lead-off hitter, get on via walk while Ryan Montini delivered an RBI double to left center field, putting the Golden Bears on the scoreboard quickly. Flynn would settle in from there, allowing a lead-off hit in the top of the second inning but would get three straight swinging strikeouts to end the top of the second unharmed as Rivier kept just their one-run lead.

The Golden Bears picked up four runs in the bottom of the second inning to overtake the lead. Leo Paragarino led off with a single while Trey Young got on base on a fielding error by the Rivier second baseman. With runners on the corner, Young would steal second while Connor Cowern would deliver an RBI through the left side of the diamond to tie the game at two. Jack Gamache would join the hit parade for the Golde Bears, singling to the pitcher on a bunt, using his speed to get to first in time, scoring Young, giving WNE a 3-2 lead. The bases would fill again after Canon Marshall would be plucked by a pitch while sacrifice flyouts from Andrew Florek and Ryan Montini would give Western New England a 5-2 lead after two innings. Connor Flynn would strand two runners in the top of the third after issuing a walk and giving up a double but a strike out and fly out to end the threat for the visitors. Western New England would load the bases in the bottom of the third and pick up one run after Marshall would take his second walk of the game to pick up the RBI, giving WNE a 6-2 lead after three innings.

Two strikeouts in the fourth inning would finish the afternoon for Flynn, who settled into the game nicely after giving up the two runs in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, Jack Loftus would smash a solo home run to left field, his fifth of the season, adding to the WNE lead. Trey Young would also add another run for Western New England to their total, coming up with an RBI single through the right side of the diamond, scoring Leo Paragarino, who singled to left field. WNE got out of the eighth inning with an 8-2 lead. Connor Slifer would replace Flynn on the mound and would strike out all three outs in the top of the fifth, using an off-speed pitch to fool the Raiders. Ryan Montini would add an RBI in the bottom of the fifth to grow WNE's lead to seven, 9-2. Canon Marshall would pitch the top of the seventh, getting a fly ball out for each of his three outs while the Golden Bears would put the Raiders away with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh. Marshall would help himself out on the mound with a single up the middle to begin the hit streak for the blue and gold. Zach Drewry notched his first hit of the season with a single to left. The bases would fill after Ryan Montini would walk with still no outs in the inning. EJ Quint would deliver a two-RBI double down the right field line to give the Golden Bears an 11-2 lead. Quint registered his first career hit for the Golden Bears. Needing just one run to win the game, Greg Nivison would pinch hit and come up with an RBI single, giving Western New England a 12-2 victory in seven innings.
