SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 15, 2025) – The Western New England baseball team came up with a huge 8-6 Conference of New England win on Tuesday afternoon from Trelease Park over the University of Hartford behind three hits and an RBI from
John Bova and the first career save from
Canon Marshall to avenge their defeat against the Hawks less than a month ago to split the regular season series.

- University of Hartford: 13-15, 5-4 CNE
How it Happened:
The Hawks got on the board first in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of an error on the first pitch of the game. JJ Romatzick would reach for the Hawks right away, followed by a single from Alek Popovich, putting runners on the corners with no outs.
Greg Nivison, who made the start for WNE, would get Hartford's three-hitter to ground into a double play but in the process, would bring home Romatzick, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears would come right back in the bottom of the first inning with two leadoff hits as
Canon Marshall and
John Bova would both single to left field.
Ryan Montini would be down to his last strike early in his count but battled back for a free base on a walk, loading the bases with no outs. The Hawks would get a strikeout for the first out of the inning but came away with an RBI single by
Leo Paragarino, evening the score at one. A sacrifice fly on the next at bat from
Connor Cowern would give Western New England a 2-1 lead after one inning of play. The Hawks would grab their lead back in the top of the third inning when Jake Santiago sent out his fifth home run of the season, this time, a two-run home run to left field, just sneaking out of Trelease Park, putting the Hawks ahead 3-2.
The Golden Bears would trail until the bottom of the fourth inning when a three-run inning would give the blue and gold their lead back.
Jack Gamache began the inning with a single while Marshall would come up with a walk and
John Bova would deliver an RBI double down the right field line, evening the score at three. The bases would load following a hit by pitch by
Jack Loftus.
Leo Paragarino would come up with another RBI in the game, this time on a walk with the bases filled, to take a 4-3 lead.
Connor Cowern would have the final RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, giving WNE a 5-3 lead after for innings of play.
Greg Nivison would be relieved by
Tanner Wall in the top of the fifth inning where Wall would allow two hits but got out of the inning with a strikeout to get out of the jam. Wall would be rewarded with three more runs by the Golden Bears in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Antonio Galizia led the inning off with a single to left field followed by a single on a bunt by
Jack Gamache. A run would eventually come around to score following a Bova single after a fielder's choice by
Ryan Montini would plate one for the Golden Beara. Loftus picked up a single of his own to score WNE's seventh run of the
game, while a throwing error by the Hawks would put the final run of the inning in, giving the Golden Bears an 8-3 lead. Hartford would respond with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning, coming up with an RBI single and sacrifice fly to get back within three after six innings of work.
Wall would continue to throw in the seventh, getting three Hawks in order via strikeout and two groundouts. The Hawks would then go quickly in the top of the eighth, getting a leadoff single but would strike out and fly out twice to end the frame which would also end the afternoon for Wall, going four innings overall. Western New England would not be able to add any insurance runs in the eighth inning, leaving the final three outs for
Canon Marshall to get, who came into the game looking for his first career save. Marshall would give up a hit, a walk, and one Hawk would reach on a WNE error but the final batter of the game would fly out as Hartford came across with one run in the inning but it would not be enough, giving the Golden Bears a much-needed 8-6 victory over Hartford.
Inside the Lines:
- Two big innings in the middle of the game would push Western New England past Hartford, coming up with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
- Overall, John Bova led the offense with three hits in four plate appearances, scoring twice and picking up an RBI.
- Ryan Montini and Jack Gamache both had two hits for Western New England overall.
- Leo Paragarino and Connor Cowern had a pair of RBIs in the game.
- Greg Nivison went the first four innings, giving up seven hits and three runs, two earned, without walking a batter and striking out three.
- Tanner Wall picked up the win to move to 2-2 on the season, going the next four innings, giving up five hits and two runs, one earned, striking out four.
- Canon Marshall picked up his first career save in the win for WNE.
- WNE avenges their defeat from less than a month ago to the Hawks to improve to 3-1 all-time against Hartford.
