Golden Bears Put Together Two Complete Games, Hit Seven Doubles, Power Through the Storm for Two Big Conference Wins

BIDDEFORD, Maine (April 24, 2025) – The Golden Bear Softball program went 2-0 versus the University of New England Nor'Easters on Thursday. The Golden Bears were led in game one by Ava Blanchard's six-strikeout performance from the pitching circle and Alex Ferriouolo's two-hit, two-double performance from the plate. WNE won 6-3. Game two saw Riley Kane go 4-for-4 from the plate, with an RBI and two doubles. Kane also struck out four batters from the pitching circle to lead WNE to a 6-2 victory in game two.

Game 1: Western New England 6, UNE 3

The Golden Bears ended their 28-inning scoreless drought in the opening inning of game one with the Nor'Easters. Riley Kane hit a two-out double, which brought Angelees Carrasquillo home, and WNE led 1-0 after the top of the first. Ava Blanchard would handle the Nor'Easters in the bottom of the inning. Blanchard got the first two batters out and then struck out the third to retire the side. In the top of the second, Kara MacDonald opposed Blanchard in the pitching circle, and after giving up the opening run in the first, MacDonald sat three WNE batters down in a row. MacDonald got the first batter to pop up and then struck out the following two batters. The Nor'Easters answered WNE in the bottom of the second with their first run of the game. Abby Walsh hit a light pop-up in between the pitcher and catcher, and the hit fell. A runner came home, and Walsh ran to third. The Nor'Easters had one out and runners on second and third for a second consecutive batter after that. However, Blanchard got the next batter to strike out and the final batter to ground out. The game moved to the third inning. The Golden Bears had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the third, and they would capitalize on the scoring chance. First, Riley Kane walked, which brought Marley Rodriguez home. Then, Alex Ferriouolo launched a ground-rule double to left field, which drove Angelees Carrasquillo and Gracie Hemstock home to extend the Golden Bear lead to 4-1 after the top of the third. The first Nor'Easter batter of the third walked, but Blanchard did not let the runner leave first as Blanchard got the next two batters to line out and struck out the final batter to bring the WNE offense back to the plate. After one batter got out for the Golden Bears, they put together two hits before Angleez Carrasquillo grounded out to second, and Shea McDaniel scored. WNE's lead was 5-1. UNE then entered the bottom of the fourth trailing by four. UNE got two runners on base but could not bring either runner home, thanks to Blanchard keeping the Nor'Easters off-balance and getting all three outs during the inning via strikeout. Mo Kinsella entered the game as the Nor'Easter pitcher in the fifth inning. WNE would see a runner get on base but would not get home because Kinsella would get the final batter to pop out. Kinsella did pick up a strikeout in the inning. UNE would cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and third, Emma Michaud would score on a throwing error by WNE. The score was 5-2, WNE. Then, after a UNE walk, Blanchard got the next batter to fly out, and the teams moved to the sixth inning. The Golden Bears scored quickly to re-extend the lead to four. Marley Rodriguez grounded out to second, bringing Alyssa Poisson home, and WNE led 6-2. WNE would get another runner on and have runners on first and third with two outs. But Kinsella got the final batter to fly out, bringing the UNE offense to the plate with six outs remaining for them to gain the lead in game one. The Nor'Easters were able to cut back into the Golden Bear lead with a two-out, two-on base single from Emma Michaud. That scored one run, and it was 6-3 going into the final inning of play. The Golden Bears got two runners on base in the seventh but could not answer the run from UNE. However, Blanchard would finish the game for the Golden Bears with a quick one, two, three inning and earned WNE the 6-3 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Game 2: Western New England 6, UNE 2

Game two did not have as quick of a start as game one. The Golden Bears had a couple of hits in the first but could not drive a run home. UNE got a runner on base, too, but two Riley Kane strikeouts and a ground out prevented UNE from scoring. The second saw the first two Golden Bear batters get on base. Alyssa Poisson hit a single to second base and beat out the throw at first after that. That drove Alex Ferriouolo home. WNE led 1-0. Then, after UNE picked up two outs, Angelees Carrasquillo bunted a single to the pitcher and brought Kim Baumann home. WNE led 2-0 going into the bottom of the second. The Nor'Easters loaded the bases with no outs to start the bottom of the second. Grace Riva would hit into a fielder's choice, which drove a runner home and cut the WNE lead to 2-1. Kane would take care of the next two batters with a strikeout and a ground out to limit the damage to just one run. WNE added to their lead in the third. An Alex Ferriouolo single up the middle of the infield drove Riley Kane home, and WNE led 3-1. Cat Higgins, UNE's starting pitcher, would get the next two outs, and the game proceeded to the bottom of the third. Kane would sit the Nor'Easters down in order in the bottom of the third. Higgins responded by seeing four batters and getting three out, with the first out being a strikeout. The bottom of the fourth saw Kane get in a little trouble but was able to get three outs before letting up another UNE run. The top of the fifth saw WNE extend their lead even further via another Alex Ferriouolo double down the right-field line, which scored Riley Kane. Then, Ferriouolo scored on a steal. WNE led 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. UNE responded with two singles to start their half of the fifth inning. However, Kane got the next three outs, and WNE still led by four going to the sixth inning. Liv Arvidson entered the game for UNE in the pitching circle going into the sixth inning. Riley Kane added to the Golden Bear lead in the sixth. Kane doubled to left-center field, and Angelees Carrasquillo scored to make the WNE lead 6-1 with two outs in the top of the sixth. UNE loaded the bases, looking to cut into the WNE lead in the bottom of the sixth with one out. However, Kane settled down and got the final two outs of the inning to get out of the situation, and WNE took a five-run lead into the final inning of the day. Arvidson would keep the deficit at five in the bottom of the seventh by seeing four batters and getting three out. Then, with two outs and two runners on base, Fiona hit a single to right-center field, and UNE cut the WNE lead to 6-2. Kane would get the final out of the day after the single, and WNE swept the Nor'Easters with a 6-2 win in game two.
