Baseball Splits Conference of New England Play With Suffolk Sunday

BOSTON, Mass. (April 27, 2025) – The Western New England baseball team salvaged a split of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon against the Rams of Suffolk University on the road in two crucial Conference of New England contests, falling in game one 10-5 before rebounding for a 5-3 victory in game two behind four hits and two RBIs from Jack Loftus

Records:
  • Western New England: 20-14, 7-6 CNE
  • Suffolk University: 12-21, 5-8 CNE
How it Happened (Game 1):
  • Suffolk jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Golden Bears saw the Rams then extend their lead in the third inning, scoring five runs overall in the frame to go ahead 7-0.
  • Western New England notched three runs in the fourth, including a solo home run from Jack Loftus and a two-RBI single from Jack Gamache
  • In the fifth, Loftus would homer again, this time, a two-run shot to get WNE back within two, 7-5.
  • Suffolk would bury WNE in the sixth with three more runs to get ahead 10-5, a deficit that would be too large for the Golden Bears to overcome.
  • Jared Kuryan tossed just three innings in his start, giving up seven earned runs while walking three.
  • Pierce Salbego went the distance for Suffolk, striking out seven over nine innings.
How it Happened (Game 2):
  • Jack Loftus wasted little time getting WNE ahead with a solo shot in the top of the first inning.
  • Matt Lauria would get the start on the bump for the Golden Bears, allowing no runs through four innings.
  • Suffolk would take a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.
  • Connor Cowern picked up a sacrifice fly of his own to tie the game in the sixth before Suffolk came back with an RBI single of their own to take the lead back 3-2 after six.
  • Ryan Montini and Loftus combined for back-to-back hits and RBIs in the seventh to push WNE over Suffolk 5-3.
  • Troy Donohue allowed no hits, runs, or walks to earn his third save of the season.
  • Lauria went 7.2 innings, giving up eight hits and three runs while striking out four Rams.
Up Next on the Schedule:
  • WNE hosts a massive CNE game on Tuesday, April 29 at 3:30 PM from Trelease Park against Nichols College.
