BRISTOL, R.I. (May 3, 2025) – The Western New England baseball team coughed up yet another late lead in the opening game of a doubleheader against the Hawks of Roger Williams University in game one, giving up five runs in the eighth but bounced back in a big way, getting a win in their final regular season game of the spring, taking a 6-5 victory in game two behind a two-run ninth-inning home run from
Jack Loftus.
Records:
- Western New England: 21-18, 8-8 CNE
- Roger Williams University: 14-21, 6-10 CNE
How it Happened (Game 1):
The contest would start without runs for the first three innings as both starters,
Jared Kuryan for Western New England and Lucas Lariviere for Roger Williams, would hold both teams off the board early. The first hit of the game for the Golden Bears wouldn't come until the top of the fourth when the blue and gold picked up a big inning, scoring four times against the Hawks' ace.
John Bova would be hit by a pitch to lead the inning off while Bova would move up on a ground out and would come in to score on the next at bat when
Corey Kilroy delivered an RBI single to center field, giving Western New England a 1-0 lead.
Connor Cowern would hit a rope to shortstop in WNE's next at bat, which was too tough to handle to the RWU infielder, putting another run on the board for the Golden Bears.
Greg Nivison would then deliver an RBI single to left field, scoring another. The final run of the inning came on a seeing-eye bunt by
Jack Gamache, who picked up the hit and RBI, giving the Golden Bears a 4-0 lead.
John Bova would connect on a big fly in the top of the fifth inning to extend WNE's lead to 5-0. RWU would pick up just one hit in the bottom of the fifth inning but would come around for three runs to get right back into the game, only trailing 5-3. On a short leash on Saturday, Kuryan would be pulled after allowing back-to-back walks in the inning and gave way to
Alex Slezak, who let the two inherited runners score, plus one more, as the Golden Bears would walk five Hawks overall in the inning to let Roger Williams back into the game.
Tanner Wall would get through a clean inning in the bottom of the sixth inning. Western New England's offense would come alive again in the top of the seventh inning as
Jack Gamache led off the inning with a single, while two Golden Bears would be hit by a pitch with two out, filling the bases.
Leo Paragarino would stay patient at the plate and took a walk to score an additional run. WNE would get out of the seventh inning without giving up a run, taking their three-run lead into the final six outs of the game.
In the eighth
Jack Gamache would continue to produce for Western New England, picking up a sacrifice fly that scored
Greg Nivison after Nivison would reach on a hit by pitch and move around the bases on a balk and sacrifice bunt from
Antonio Galizia. The four-run lead would not be enough, however, as Wall would struggle mightily in the bottom of the eighth inning for Western New England as the Golden Bears would see their lead evaporate quickly. RWU would bounce out to begin the inning but would record three straight singles, including an RBI single to get a run on the board, trailing 7-4. The Golden Bears would then ground out for their second out of the frame. An error from WNE would prove to be very costly as two more runs would cross. RWU got within one run, would take a walk, and then a two-RBI double from Owen Hibbard gave the Hawks their first lead of the afternoon, leading 8-7 after eight. The Golden Bears had no answer in the ninth, going down in order, dropping an 8-8 contest in stunning fashion.
Inside the Lines:
- Tanner Wall would be sharp for Western New England in his first two innings of work, but the sophomore would unravel in the eighth, giving up five runs and four hits while the Golden Bears committed one error.
- Jack Gamache had the lone two-hit game for WNE, picking up two RBIs.
- Jared Kuryan lasted 4.1 innings, giving up two hits and two runs, both earned, while walking three and striking out five over 72 pitches.
- RWU dealt WNE their fourth straight loss and seventh in their last nine games overall.
How it Happened (Game 2):
Looking to secure a home game in the upcoming Conference of New England tournament, the Golden Bears would threaten in the top of the first inning when
Ryan Montini began the inning with a single, but WNE would strikeout twice to quickly end the threat.
Matt Lauria made his scheduled Saturday afternoon start for WNE and would breeze right by the Hawks in the bottom of the frame. The top of the second inning brought the first run of game two for Western New England without committing a hit.
Greg Nivison and
Ryan Montini would be hit by a pitch, while
Antonio Galizia would be put aboard on a walk.
John Bova would also take his four pitches and get on base, picking up the RBI, giving the Golden Bears the 1-0 lead. The bottom of the second inning would not go as smoothly for Lauria as the first did, as the WNE senior would give up two hits, both singles, and a sacrifice fly, which gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead after two.
The Golden Bears wouldn't be able to score on a two-out single in the top of the fourth, but the Hawks would add an extra run to their total in the bottom of the inning when Ethan Keeney picked up an RBI single to left field, extending their lead to two, 3-1. The middle innings brought no more scoring as Western New England continued to find themselves down by two.
Matt Lauria would be relieved in the bottom of the sixth in place of
Demitri Boulas, who pitched a clean sixth, getting three fly outs. Western New England would finally reward their game two pitching with a game-tying two-run home run in the top of the seventh by
Corey Kilroy. Kilroy would send his third home run of the season over the fences, first on the road this season, to even the score at three.
Troy Donohue would enter the game in the bottom of the seventh, and the game would not stay tied after seven as the lefty gave up two hits and two runs overall as the Hawks became just six outs away from sweeping the doubleheader.
The Golden Bears would take advantage of an error to lead off the inning after
Connor Cowern would strike out, but would reach first on an RWU error by the catcher. Cowern would swipe second while
Antonio Galizia would walk, putting runners on first and second with one out. After a fly out that moved Cowern to third base, a wild pitch from RWU's Conor Quinlan would score Cowern, an important run for the Golden Bears.
Lucas Kamoen locked up the eighth inning for the Golden Bears, allowing a walk and a single, but got the final out on a line out to shortstop, leaving the final three outs in RWU's hands, looking to sweep the Golden Bears. The blue and gold had other plans as
John Bova led off the top of the ninth with an infield single. Bova would pass the bat to
Jack Loftus, who did not miss, smashing a two-run home run, his tenth of the season, to give Western New England a 6-5 lead. WNE would not be able to get any additional runs from there, taking a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Lucas Kamoen would step back onto the hill, looking for the final three outs. Nolan Hester would pick up a single for the Hawks with one out, but Kamoen would settle in, getting a strikeout and a pop out to end the game, sending Western New England to a 6-5 victory.
Inside the Lines:
- Jack Loftus's two-run home run in the top of the ninth would be the difference on Saturday, helping WNE baseball lock up the three-seed in the upcoming CNE Tournament.
- Corey Kilroy launched his third home run of the season to help Western New England come back and tie the game in the seventh.
- Lucas Kamoen was brilliant on the mound, going two innings, giving up just two hits and a walk while striking out one. Kamoen improves to 3-0 on the season on the hill.
- The Golden Bears picked up just six hits in the game, just enough to come up with the win.
Up Next on the Schedule:
- The Golden Bears will take on the Rams of Suffolk University in the Conference of New England Tournament's first round game on Wednesday, May 7 at 3:00 PM from Trelease Park.
