Bid At Comeback Falls Short For WNE At Salve Regina In Overtime Defeat

NEWPORT. R.I. (September 13, 2025) – The Western New England football team traveled to Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon where they suffered their first loss of the season in overtime, falling 34-28 in overtime. WNE erased a 22-point deficit to force the extra session, but the Seahawks ultimately prevailed.

Records:
  • Western New England: 1-1
  • Salve Regina University: 2-0
How It Happened:

First Quarter:
  • It would be all Seahawks in the opening quarter, who quickly stunned the Golden Bears with a roaring 21 points to open the game. WNE's first drive ended in no points and would last just 1:46 of game. Salve Regina quickly marched down the field after a failed fourth down would put the Seahawks in prime field position. Salve QB Thomas Fallon would find Spencer Chapman for a 19 yard touchdown, giving SRU a 7-0 lead.
  • Following no score on their next drive, a quick interception from Johnny Ferrentino would put WNE on the SRU 28 yard line but the Golden Bears would settle for three points on a Max LoGrasso field goal from 30 yards out, giving WNE its first points of the day.
  • Salve Regina would need just one play after a 56 yard kickoff return would spark a 35 yard touchdown run from Justan Luzzi, putting the Seahawks ahead 14-3. The WNE offense would get off the field quickly again while Salve would once again score, this time on a 71 yard bomb from Fallon to Jacoby Smith, putting the Seahawks ahead 21-3 after the opening quarter, stunning Western New England.
Second Quarter:
  • The second offensive play of the quarter would give the ball back to the Seahawks as Paul Gorry's pass would be picked off, putting the Seahawks at their own 42 yard line. The WNE defense came up big with Ryan Jones and Brayden Bunnell making tackles for the Golden Bears to keep the Seahawks at bay and forcing a punt. WNE would use the next 5:22 of clock on a 13 play, 57 yard drive but came up empty, going for a 4th-and-19 but did not convert, handing the ball back to SRU with 8:03 to play in the half.
  • Salve Regina would not be able to score on the next drive, handing the ball back to the WNE offense. Austin Pszczolkowski picked up a pair of tackles to keep the Seahawks from scoring on the drive. With 27 seconds to play in the half, Western New England picked up a 27 yard field goal from LoGrasso.
  • The Seahawks were not done scoring in the half, coming up with another Fallon to Chapman touchdown, this time a 20 yard score after Luzzi rushed for 45 yards to begin the drive. The touchdown brought Salve Regina to a 28-6 halftime lead.
Third Quarter:
  • With WNE down big, the defense, led by reigning CNE Rookie of the Week Miles Stovall, got the Seahawks off the field in just 58 seconds to begin the quarter and the Golden Bears offense would go to work. A 13 play, 69 yard drive would lead to seven points on the scoreboard for WNE as a 25 yard touchdown pass from Paul Gorry to John De Camps would convert, giving the Golden Bears their first touchdown of the game. De Camps and Gorry would find each other for 16 yards earlier in the drive while a fumble nearly cost WNE, but a touchdown cut the deficit to 28-13.
  • Nathaniel Mathis, Nick Kolifrath, Austin Pszczolkowski, and Miles Stovall all had tackles for WNE on Salve's quick next possession, giving the ball back to WNE as the third quarter came to a close. Driving down the field, WNE would end the quarter with the ball at midfield, still down by 15 with 15 minutes left to play.
Fourth Quarter:
  • The WNE drive from the third quarter into the fourth quarter would put more points on the scoreboard with De'Andre Harris finding the end zone for the first time this season, grabbing a six yard touchdown pass from Gorry, giving WNE just a 28-21 deficit, following a two point conversion which Gorry would find De Camps in the end zone for the score. On the ensuing drive from Salve, Johnny Ferrentino picked up his second interception of the game, his second interception of the game — none bigger than this one — gave WNE the ball back with still 11:06 to play.
  • The next drive for the Golden Bears resulted in another touchdown as the offense continued to roll, this time, tying the game at 28. The run came consisting of Matt LaMontagne, Paul Gorry, and Matthew McGuire would rush WNE down to the Salve seven yard line while Gorry found De Camps in the end zone for six points with 8:26 left to tie the game at 28 following the extra point from LoGrasso.
  • Salve Regina brought the ball down to the WNE 11 yard line with 1:55 to go and missed a field goal from 28 yards out as WNE survived the scare and would get the ball at its own 20 yard line. The Golden Bears quickly gave the ball back on an interception, but WNE's defense responded. With 16 seconds left, Nick Kolifrath intercepted Fallon at the nine-yard line to send the game to overtime..
Overtime:
  • WNE would not be able to score in the OT session as the third straight interception would be thrown, this time on the Salve nine yard line with WNE just nine yards from scoring a potential game-winning touchdown. The ball would head back to the home team where Salve Regina would ice the game.
  • Justan Luzzi carried the ball for 20 yards and a third and goal would be capped off by another touchdown pass to Jacoby Smith from Thomas Fallon, walking off the game for the Seahawks, giving Salve a 34-28 win.
