Mrzywka Has Highlight Day, Golden Bears Run Through Fighting Scots 7-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 20, 2025) – WNE hosted their second conference opponent of the season, Gordon College, on Saturday inside Golden Bear Stadium. After a quiet first half, WNE would announce their presence in the second half. They were led by Mikayla Mrzywka, who notched a hat trick to lead WNE to a 7-0 victory.

Records:

  • Western New England: 5-2 (2-0)
  • Gordon College: 0-8 (0-2)

How it Happened:

  • The contest began with Alex Tardugno in goal for WNE and Allyson Stauffer in goal for Gordon College.
  • There were no goals scored in the first quarter, but WNE did get pressure on goal with six shots, one shot on goal saved by Stauffer, and four penalty corners.
  • The second quarter saw increased pressure, but Gordon still did not crack.
  • In the second quarter, WNE had seven shots, four shots on goal, and three penalty corners.
  • At the halftime break, WNE led in shots 13-0, shots on goal 5-0, and penalty corners 7-0.
  • In the third quarter, WNE finally broke through.
  • After a Gordon shot that did not test Tardugno, WNE's Mikayla Mrzywka found the back of the goal after a Haley Kaczka assist in the 35th minute.
  • Kayla Antonelli then scored twenty-two seconds later off an assist from Kara Edwards. WNE led 2-0.
  • WNE kept the pressure on with three more shots and two corners before Tessa Ebreo scored the third WNE goal of the third quarter in the 38th minute.
  • Then, four shots and two corners after that, Mrzywka scored a second goal of the day off another assist from Haley Kaczka. WNE led 4-0 in the 41st minute and would take that lead into the fourth quarter.
  • WNE was not done, though, as they would score on their first shot of the 48th minute. That was the highlight moment of the game as Mikayla Mrzywka scored a hat trick. Kayla Antonelli had the assist, and WNE led 5-0.
  • The next shot from WNE came in the 53rd minute, with Kayla Surprenant scoring after a Tania Evans assist. WNE led 6-0.
  • WNE had four more shots and a corner before they scored their seventh goal of the second half. Haley Kaczka, who had two assists, got a goal after a Tessa Ebro assist. WNE led 7-0 in the 58th minute of the game.
  • WNE had five more shots, with three being saved by Stauffer, and that is how the game would end. WNE won 7-0.

Inside the Lines:

  • WNE defeated Gordon College 7-0.
  • Mikayla Mrzywka scored a first career Golden Bear hat trick in Mrzywka's seventh career game as a WNE student-athlete. That equals six points for Mrzywka.
  • Haley Kaczka picked up a goal and two assists for four total points.
  • Kayla Antonelli, Kayla Surprenant, and Tessa Ebreo all had a goal and an assist for WNE.
  • Kara Edwards and Tania Evans recorded assists as well.
  • WNE only let up one shot versus Gordon.
  • WNE had more shots, 40-1, shots on goal, 23-0, and corners, 16-0.
  • Gordon had more saves, 16-0.
