Springfield is Blue and Gold: Ebreo and Mrzywka Lead WNE to a Comeback Win Over Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 24, 2025) – WNE traveled down the road to Springfield College for their midweek nonconference matchup on Wednesday. Springfield would score the opening goal in the first quarter, but WNE would respond with a goal in the third from Tessa Ebreo and another two goals in the fourth from Mikayla Mrzywka to lift WNE to a 3-1 win.

Records:

  • Western New England: 6-3 (2-0)
  • Springfield College: 5-3 (1-0)

How it Happened:

  • The contest began with Alex Tardugno and Sam Orcutt in goal for WNE and Springfield, respectively.
  • WNE had the majority of the early chances. They had two early shots saved by Orcutt in the 8th minute.
  • However, Springfield would answer with a penalty corner taken by Nicolette Morlock, who found Clare Moore for the game's opening goal. Springfield led 1-0 in the tenth minute.
  • The Golden Bears had a corner at the end of the first quarter, but could not score before the end of the quarter.
  • The second quarter saw WNE garner most of the goal-scoring chances.
  • The Golden Bears would have three corners and two shots. Only one shot had to be saved by Orcutt.
  • WNE kept sending pressure at Springfield, but they could not score in the first half, and at halftime, WNE trailed 1-0.
  • The first half statistics saw WNE lead 4-3 in shots, 3-2 in shots on goal, and 5-2 in penalty corners. Springfield had more saves, 3-1.
  • Springfield opened the second half by picking up the first corner and shot on goal. Tardugno would make the save to keep the deficit at one.
  • Then, WNE went to work. They picked up shot after shot and corner after corner until eventually they would prevail.
  • The 39th minute saw Mackenna Cooke send a shot at goal after a penalty corner taken by Tessa Ebreo, which was saved. Kara Edwards hit the rebound back at the goal, but again Orcutt saved it.
  • Finally, on the third try, Tessa Ebreo would score, and the game was tied 1-1.
  • Springfield would immediately respond with a shot on goal, but it was saved. After three quarters of play, the contest was tied 1-1.
  • The fourth quarter started quickly for WNE. Two minutes into the quarter, Mackenna Cooke found Mikayla Mrzywka in front of the goal. Mrzywka would direct the ball into the goal, and WNE led 2-1, with thirteen minutes left in the game.
  • Springfield would respond with three penalty corners and two shots, one of which had to be saved by Tardugno.
  • WNE weathered the storm and would respond with a corner.
  • That corner taken by Tessa Ebreo was sent to Mikayla Mrzywka, who scored a second goal on the evening to secure the WNE victory, 3-1.

Inside the Lines:

  • WNE defeated Springfield 3-1.
  • Clare Moore opened the game with a goal in the tenth minute. Nicolette Morlock was credited with the assist.
  • The 39th minute saw Tessa Ebreo score to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Mikayla Mrzywka scored in the 48th minute off an assist from Mackenna Cooke, and WNE had a 2-1 lead.
  • Mrzywka would score once more in the 57th minute to secure the WNE victory. Tessa Ebreo had the assist. WNE led 3-1.
  • The final statistics showed WNE leading in shots 11-7, shots on goal 10-5, and penalty corners 8-7. Springfield led in saves, 7-4.
