Edward's First-Half Goal Lifts Golden Bears Past Gordon, 1-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 21, 2026) — A first-half goal from Nick Edward, assisted by Owen Dieterle, proved to be the difference Wednesday afternoon as the Western New England University men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gordon College in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Suprenant Field. The Golden Bears capitalized on their best scoring opportunity midway through the opening half before relying on a disciplined defensive performance and timely goalkeeping from Brendan L'Italien to preserve the one-goal advantage. Despite being outshot 14-11, Western New England held Gordon scoreless for all 90 minutes to secure an important conference victory.

Records:

Western New England: 5-5-5 (4-2-2 CNE)
Gordon College: 7-6-2 (4-4-0 CNE)

How It Happened:

First Half

  • Western New England generated the first offensive opportunity of the afternoon when Tyler Lewis recorded a shot in the seventh minute. Gordon responded shortly afterward, forcing Brendan L'Italien into his first save at the 7:52 mark when Santiago Hernandez directed an attempt toward the upper-left portion of the goal. The early exchanges established a competitive opening stretch, with both sides looking to create scoring opportunities.
  • The Golden Bears continued to push forward in the 12th and 13th minutes. Jake Thibodeau placed a shot on goal at 11:07, forcing Gordon goalkeeper Riley Calemmo to make his first save, before Lewis added another attempt at 12:37. Gordon countered with an effort from Quinn Willis that sailed high and left of the target.
  • Western New England began to build pressure midway through the half, earning consecutive corner kicks at 24:08 and 25:02 following a shot from Andrew Macca. The Golden Bears capitalized moments later when Nick Edward scored at 25:26 off an assist from Owen Dieterle, putting WNE ahead 1-0. Edward's finish ultimately stood as the only goal of the contest.
  • Gordon attempted to respond immediately, with Willis recording a shot just 31 seconds after the goal. The Fighting Scots continued their offensive efforts through the 30th and 33rd minutes, generating multiple attempts from Jack Bibighaus, Hernandez and Willis. Western New England's defensive unit kept those efforts from reaching the goalkeeper, preserving the narrow advantage.
  • The Golden Bears continued searching for an insurance goal as the opening half progressed. Dieterle registered an attempt wide of the right post in the 34th minute, while Nigel Martin sent another shot over the crossbar in the 38th minute. Gordon answered with opportunities from Cortez Cardone and Cameron Vavala, but neither attempt found the target.
  • Western New England entered halftime holding a 1-0 lead, despite Gordon's narrow 8-7 advantage in first-half shots. The Golden Bears recorded two corner kicks and one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, while L'Italien made one save to help maintain the shutout.

Second Half

  • Western New England opened the second half looking to extend its advantage, with Andrew Macca registering the first shot after the break at 47:15. Gordon answered in the 52nd minute when Andrew Lazich sent an attempt wide of the left post, signaling the beginning of a more aggressive offensive stretch for the visitors.
  • The Fighting Scots produced one of their most dangerous sequences in the 58th minute. Santiago Hernandez struck the right post at 57:24, narrowly missing the equalizer. Just eight seconds later, Quinn Willis followed with another attempt as Gordon continued applying pressure. The Golden Bears survived the sequence with their one-goal lead intact.
  • Gordon maintained its offensive presence into the middle stages of the second half, earning a corner kick at 62:39 before Will Goodling sent a shot over the crossbar less than a minute later. Western New England responded with opportunities of its own, including an attempt from Macca at 60:13, as the Golden Bears looked to create additional separation.
  • The Golden Bears generated a quality scoring opportunity in the 70th minute when Tyler Lewis directed a shot toward the bottom-left corner of the net. Gordon goalkeeper Riley Calemmo made the save at 69:43, keeping the Fighting Scots within one goal and setting up a tense final 20 minutes.
  • Gordon threatened again at 76:39 when Jake Scruton placed an attempt toward the bottom-right corner, but L'Italien was positioned to make the save and protect the shutout. Lewis nearly doubled Western New England's lead in the 83rd minute, forcing another save from Calemmo with a shot directed toward the center of the goal.
  • The Golden Bears remained composed throughout the closing minutes as Gordon searched for an equalizer. Lazich sent an attempt wide in the 86th minute, and Western New England earned a late corner kick at 89:36 before the final whistle secured the 1-0 conference victory. Gordon held a 6-4 advantage in second-half shots, but the Golden Bears' defensive effort kept the Fighting Scots off the scoreboard.
