Golden Bears Stun Seahawks With Three-Goal Fourth-Quarter Comeback

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 28, 2026) – The Western New England field hockey team trailed by a pair with just north of ten minutes to play in the game, but a pair of goals from Mikayla Mrzywka and one in between from Maddie Ripley helped fuel a comeback on Wednesday night as the Blue and Gold defeated the Seahawks of Salve Regina University in the regular season finale from Gaudet Field.

Records:
  • Western New England: 12-6
  • Salve Regina University: 8-9
How it Happened:

First Quarter:
  • Neither team generated much of an offensive attack in the opening 15 minutes of play as the first shot of the game came with just 2:32 remaining in the frame from Salve's Jordyn Pineau, who saw her shot blocked by the Western New England defense.
  • Pineau got another chance with 1:50 to go in the quarter and potted the ball into the back of the net to give the Seahawks the opening 1-0 lead.
  • Western New England failed to record a shot in the first quarter and found themselves trailing by a goal.
Second Quarter:
  • The Golden Bears picked up their first penalty corner of the game just 2:16 into the second quarter. Jenna Nigro had an attempt blocked, registering WNE's first official shot in the game.
  • Salve took over on offense and came up with a pair of shots that were again blocked by the WNE defense, while a third penalty corner in the game taken by the Seahawks saw Grace Warnick take a shot on goal that was saved by Alex Tardugno.
  • The Golden Bears moved down the field and had a chance on offense when reigning CNE Rookie of the Week Kamryn Miller had an attempt at goal, but it was again blocked, as the Golden Bears failed to put a shot on goal in the opening half.  The Blue and Gold found themselves down by one heading into the second half.
Third Quarter:
  • Western New England gained some offensive pressure early in the third quarter as Kaelyn Samuelson and Tessa Ebreo took shots for the Golden Bears, with Ebreo's being the first shot on goal in the quarter, but still could not find the back of the net.
  • Salve Regina extended its lead five minutes into the quarter when Pineau scored her second of the night, giving the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.
  • Western New England and Salve Regina both took three shots in the quarter, but it was Salve Regina that led by a pair after 45 minutes.
Fourth Quarter:
  • The Seahawks had the first attack in the fourth quarter as Pineau was all over the offensive side of the ball, taking a shot that sailed wide. Western New England responded with three penalty corners in a row and eventually came through with a goal with 10:40 to play in the game when Mikayla Mrzywka roofed a shot just under the crossbar and into the cage to get the Golden Bears within one, 2-1.
  • The Golden Bears continued to pressure the Seahawks and came through with a goal less than three minutes later when Maddie Ripley moved to a through pass and poked the ball by Salve's goalkeeper, who came out to challenge Ripley, as Ripley was able to take a touch on the ball and put it into the back of the cage to tie the game at two.
  • Western New England wasn't done there, finding another goal within three minutes again, as Mrzywka danced by the Salve defense and goalkeeper and tucked the ball into an open cage, giving the Golden Bears a 3-2 lead. The Golden Bears held offensive possession for the final five minutes of the game and came away with a massive fourth-quarter comeback to down the Seahawks on Wednesday night.
Inside the Lines:
  • The Golden Bears were led by a fourth-quarter comeback, with Mikayla Mrzywka scoring her 18th and 19th goals of the season in the win. Maddie Ripley contributed on the scoreboard with her fifth tally of the year.
