Rodriguez Earns Massive Come-From-Behind Victory, Sparks Dual Match Victory In Home Finale For Men’s Wrestling

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 13, 2026) – The Western New England men's wrestling team earned an emphatic 28-17 victory over the Engineers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Friday night inside the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center in the final home dual match of the season for the Golden Bears. Seven of the ten weight classes went WNE's way in the victory.

How it Happened:
Western New England fell behind in the opening match of the night as WPI's Charlie Pavis earned a technical fall victory over Clayton O'Connor to go up 5-0 early. Antonio Intintiolo got those five points right back for the Golden Bears, earning a technical fall of his own, 17-0 in 2:49, to tie the match at five. Austin Monteiro's late match heroics saw the senior earn a crucial riding time point to earn a major decision win over WPI's Mason Medina, 9-1, in the 141 lb. weight class. James Linder then picked up a 4-1 win via decision over WPI's Mason Basara in the 149 lb. weight class, as Western New England took a 12-5 lead in the match. At 157 lbs., Matthew Rodriguez came from behind in the third period to tie the match late to force overtime and got the takedown to come away with a 12-9 sudden victory. The Golden Bears continued their winning ways when Teghan McConnell earned a win over WPI's Joey Baisley on an injury while Maxwell Bluhm picked up an 11-2 major decision over Theo Sawyers in the 174 lb. weight class, capping off six match victories in a row for the Golden Bears.
