Fortin Ends Golden Bears’ Season in Style with Game-Winning Goal in Overtime

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 20, 2026) – WNE hosted the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology in their final game of the season. After celebrating the graduating seniors of WNE, the team scored early in the contest thanks to Camille Marcoux. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the contest, with Matty Zdanowicz scoring for WNE as well. The game went to overtime, and after not having a shot for the first three and a half minutes of overtime, Mathew Fortin scored for WNE and helped WNE end the season in the win column.

Records:
Western New England: 6-19-0 (4-16-0)
Wentworth Institute of Technology: 5-17-2 (4-14-1)

How it Happened:
First Period:
  • The teams started the matchup by trading power play chances. Neither team could find a goal, though. Luca Scaglione and Jack McGovern could not be scored on early.
  • With the teams skating at even-strength with 8:46 left in the opening period of play, Camille Marcoux found the opening goal for WNE. Everest Schneider and Luca Scaglione assisted the goal, and WNE led 1-0. The Leopards answered with eight of the next nine shots, but the WNE defense stood strong.
  • WIT ended the first with thirteen consecutive shots and had a power play chance going into the second period of play. They did not have the lead on the scoreboard, but on the stat sheet, they led in shots 29-13, shots on goal 21-5, and faceoff wins 13-11. WNE led in saves 21-3.
Second Period:
  • WNE would kill off that penalty to start the second and keep the momentum on their side. However, the Leopards sent shot after shot at Scaglione, who kept turning the shots away. WNE picked up a power play chance toward the middle of the second, but could not score.
  • The Golden Bears would kill off another WIT power play during the second, but two seconds after it ended, Nick Cullinan found the net off assists from Seth Robinson and Ian Worthley. The score was tied 1-1 with 6:46 left in the second.
  • The teams traded shots and penalties the rest of the second, and the score stayed tied at one after the middle period of play was over. The Leopards still led the stat line in the second. They had more shots, 24-11, shots on goal 15-5, and faceoff wins 10-9. WNE had more saves, 14-5.
Third Period:
  • The Golden Bears quickly earned their lead back in the third and final period of play. Senior Matty Zdanowicz scored the goal for WNE to reclaim the lead on the power play. Billy VanSumeren and Gavin Mastrodonato assisted the goal, and WNE led 2-1.
  • The Golden Bears went back on the power play soon after but could not extend their lead. That would give the Leopards a chance to tie the game with 8:51 left, and they did. Nolan Pecora found the goal off assists from Seth Robinson and Nicholas Ramm to tie the game at 2-2.
  • The teams traded shots after that, and the final game of the season for WNE ended up in overtime, with the teams tied at two. The third period of play stats saw WNE lead in shots, 26-19, and shots on goal, 15-8. They also had more faceoff wins, 14-11. The Leopards had more saves, 14-7.
Overtime:
  • The Leopards ended regular time on a power play, so they started overtime with a 4-on-3 advantage. Wentworth won the opening faceoff but could not score on their three power play shots, and the game continued.
  • Wentworth continued to send shots at the goal but could not find the goal. Then, on WNE's first shot of overtime and final shot of their season, Mathew Fortin scored! Camille Marcoux had the assist, and WNE ended the season with an overtime win.
