Golden Bears Fight Hard With Mount Union, Fall Just Short, 4-3

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 10, 2026) – The Western New England men's tennis team couldn't pick up one more win in order to defeat the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union on Tuesday night on the Cordillo Tennis Courts under the lights of Hilton Head, falling just short by a 4-3 final score.

Records:
  • Western New England: 2-4
  • University of Mount Union: 6-4
How it Happened:

The all-important doubles point turned out to be decisive on Tuesday night as the Purple Raiders snagged the opening point of the match, winning two of the three doubles matches. The top spot saw WNE's Michel Abizaid Nunez and Colby Esposito fall just short in a 6-3 decision to Mount Union. The second doubles match went Western New England's way, as Eston Fowler and Quinn Northrop combined for a sweep victory, 6-0, over Andrew Cavett and Carson Arfaras. Mount Union pulled out the win in the third doubles match as Connor Lord and Kyle Poccia were defeated 6-2, giving the Purple Raiders a 1-0 lead in the match.

The top two singles players for Western New England came up with big victories to put WNE ahead 2-1 in the match. Colby Esposito earned a 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 victory in the top spot for the Golden Bears, while Quinn Northrop won the second singles match in straight sets, picking up a 6-1, 6-4 win. Mount Union bounced back in the third singles match, taking down Eston Fowler. Nolan Jermain came away with a win in the fourth spot for the Golden Bears, a 7-5, 6-2 victory, seeing Western New England take a 3-2 lead in the match. Mount Union tied the match at three after securing the win in the sixth singles position, leaving the match in the hands of the fifth singles match, which went the distance. Michael Abizaid Nunez dropped the opening set of that match, 7-5, but roared back with a 6-0 sweep in the second set to force a third and final set. In that set, Mount Union's Jacob Timonere came away with a 10-7 win, giving the Purple Raiders a 4-3 match victory.
