SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 25, 2026) – The Golden Bears were finally able to get back on their home field after the rain delayed their conference opener twice. The wait was well worth it as the Golden Bears would take game one 4-3 behind ten
Riley Kane strikeouts and game two 8-5 behind the game-winning three-run double from
Shea McDaniel in the fourth inning.
Game One:
Score:
- Western New England: 4
- University of New England: 3
How it Happened:
First Inning:
- Both teams started the contest slow in the first inning as both got runners on base, but could not get a runner home. Riley Kane collected three strikeouts in the top of the inning. Kara MacDonald picked up one.
Second Inning:
Third and Fourth Innings:
- These two innings saw three one, two, three innings, and UNE had the lone hit. It was a double from Adrianna Carsetti, but no runs would be scored. Both pitchers had four strikeouts between the innings, and MacDonald struck out the side in the bottom of the third.
Fifth Inning:
- The fifth inning saw UNE get a runner to third, but once again, Kane shut the door, and WNE held their 4-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
Sixth Inning:
- Both teams got a runner on base in the sixth, but once again, neither team could collect any runs, and the Nor'Easters were down to their final three outs.
Seventh Inning:
- UNE would show fight, and it came from a three-run home run to deep center field. Emma Michaud launched a hit over the center field fence, scoring Hannah Lappin and Chloe Whitten. The lead was down to 4-3.
- Kane got the final out two batters later and secured a 4-3 opening conference game win versus the Nor'Easters.
Inside the Diamond:
- WNE won game one of the doubleheader, 4-3.
- Four Golden Bears had hits in game one. Shea McDaniel led the team, going 1-2, with a 2 RBI performance in the opening contest.
- Marley Rodriguez and Angelees Carrasquillo both had RBIs.
- Shea McDaniel had the lone extra-base hit, a double.
- Hannah Lappin led the Nor'Easters in the first contest by going 2-3 and scoring a run. Three UNE batters had extra-base hits.
- Riley Kane earned the win, with ten strikeouts.
Game Two:
- Western New England: 8
- University of New England: 5
How it Happened:
First Inning:
- The Nor'Easters jumped out to a quick lead in game two thanks to a Zofia Twarog single that saw Hannah Irons score. UNE led 1-0, and Mo Kinsella held WNE to no runs or hits in the bottom of the first.
Second Inning:
Third Inning:
- UNE responded with two runs in the top of the third. It started with a Tess Buldoc double to left field, which drove Hannah Irons home. That tied the game. Then, Adrianna Carsetti grounded out, and Emma Michaud scored. UNE led 3-2. Kinsella dealt with WNE in the bottom of the inning, and WNE trailed after three.
Fourth Inning:
Fifth Inning:
- UNE would not go away, as Tess Bolduc doubled in the top of the fifth inning, driving Irons and Twarog home and cutting the WNE lead to 6-5.
- Katherine Brooks responded with a one-out home run to right-center field, her first of her Golden Bear career. WNE led 8-5 after Brooks and Payton McDaniel scored.
Seventh Inning:
- The sixth inning saw back-to-back one, two, three innings, and just like that, UNE was down to their final three outs.
- UNE got a runner to second, but WNE's first-year phenom, Kaylin Heffern, got the final two outs, with the final out being a called strikeout on the inside corner of the plate. WNE won the game 8-5.
Inside the Diamond:
- The Golden Bears won game two, to complete the sweep, 8-5.
- Five Golden Bears had hits in game two. Four Golden Bears had extra-base hits.
- Angelees Carrasquillo and Katherine Brooks led WNE with three and two RBIs, respectively. Carrasquillo had the double and Brooks had the homerun.
- Hannah Irons went 1-2 with two walks, and Tess Bolduc went 2-4 with three RBIs to lead the Nor'Easters.
- Sophia Keays earned the win for WNE with three strikeouts, her first career Golden Bear win.
- Kaylin Heffern earned her first career Golden Bear save with two innings of relief and one strikeout to end the contest.
