SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 27, 2026) – WNE welcomed the Wheaton College Lyons to campus for a non-conference doubleheader on Friday. The Golden Bears would fall in game one 9-2 thanks to a top-notch performance from Wheaton's pitcher, Sofia DeLaRosa.
Brianna Cardona would pitch a gem of a game, as WNE won game two in extra innings, 1-0.
Shea McDaniel had the walk-off single to win the contest.
Game One:
Score:
- Western New England: 2
- Wheaton College: 9
How it Happened:
First Inning:
- The Lyons started the game strong. Ella Molinari gave the Lyons a 1-0 lead with a double down the left field line, scoring Amber Arcand. Then, Peyton Blankenheim-Brown singled to right to double the lead with Taylor Barry scoring.
- Mady Bryan and Gabby Reinbold followed that double with back-to-back singles, which earned the Lyons a 4-0 lead. Molinari and Blankenheim-Brown scored on those singles, respectively.
- The Golden Bears were retired in order in their first offensive stand.
Second Inning:
- The second saw both pitchers, Riley Kane and Sofia Delarosa, get through the orders, giving up a hit, but recording three outs before a run scored.
Third Inning:
- The third inning started with Kane sitting the Lyons down in order.
- The Golden Bears would get runners on second and third, but could not capitalize, and the score stayed at 4-0.
Fourth Inning:
- The Lyons extended their lead in the fourth via a Taylor Barry single. Riley Dolan scored, and they led 5-0.
- WNE answered in the bottom of the inning. Evelyn Picone singled on a hit to right field, scoring Kane, and WNE cut the deficit to 5-1.
Fifth Inning:
- Kane would get out of the top of the inning without letting up a run, leading to some momentum for WNE. Payton McDaniel capitalized and drove Marley Rodriguez home with a pinch-hit double. WNE now trailed 5-2.
Seventh Inning:
- After very little offense in the sixth inning, the teams headed to the seventh, where Blankenheim-Brown would launch a 2-run homerun over the center-field fence, and Wheaton led 7-2. That would bring Sophia Keays into the game to pitch for WNE.
- Amber Arcand and Taylor Barry would then walk, and both bring runs home with those walks. Emma Boucher and Mady Bryan would score, and the score read 9-2.
- DeLaRosa would sit the Golden Bears down one, two, three in the bottom of the inning, and that would end the contest, with Wheaton winning game one 9-2.
Inside the Diamond:
- The Lyons defeated the Golden Bears 9-2 in game one.
- Peyton Blankenheim-Brown led the Lyons by going 3-4 with three RBIs, a home run, and scoring two runs, as well.

Game Two: Final/8
- Western New England: 1
- Wheaton College: 0
How it Happened:
First Inning:
- Game two was a defensive battle, and the first inning started it. Brianna Cardona pitched for WNE and got out of the first inning without letting up a run. Mainly thanks to Marley Rodriguez throwing a runner out at home after a double from Molinari.
- Peyton Blankenheim-Brown would pitch for the Lyons in game two and sit WNE down one, two, three in the first.
Second Inning:
- The second saw both teams get a runner on, but both pitchers got the final three outs in a row to move the contest to the third.
Third and Fourth Innings:
- The third and fourth innings saw both teams get runners on during the innings, but again, the defenses played their roles and kept the game stuck at 0-0.
Fifth and Sixth Innings:
- Both innings saw the pitchers continue to excel at the expense of each batter that came to the plate. WNE had a runner get on base in the fifth, but Cardona sat the Lyons down in order in both innings, and WNE would only see three get up to bat in the sixth.
Seventh Inning:
- The seventh inning would once again not see any runners score, and the pitchers would move the game to an extra inning.
Eighth Inning:
- Brianna Cardona kept up the great performance with a one, two, three innings, not letting the runner placed on second get home, and WNE got up in the bottom of the inning.
- After an Ava Barnhart bunt moved Alyssa Ferriouolo to third, Shea McDaniel slapped a single over shortstop and into left field to give WNE the walkoff 1-0 win versus the Lyons.
Inside the Diamond:
- Game two went to extra innings before seeing WNE win 1-0.
- Shea McDaniel was the hero for WNE by having the game-winning single in the eighth inning. McDaniel went 2-3 in the game, with the only RBI.
- Two Wheaton batters had a hit. Ella Molinari and Gabby Reinbold were the hitters for the Lyons.
- Brianna Cardona pitched eight scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out three batters.
