Northrop Comes Back From A Set Down, Caps Off WNE’s 5-2 Victory Over USJ

Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (March 26, 2026) – The Western New England men's tennis team ripped off its third straight Conference of New England victory on Thursday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), as Quinn Northrop came from a set down in the second singles position to claim victory and pushed the Golden Bears to a 5-2 victory.

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears couldn't come away with the early point in the match, seeing the Blue Jays pick up the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Western New England's lone victory in doubles play came from Nolan Jermain and Michel Abizaid Nunez, who teamed up to sweep their opponents in the second doubles position, winning 6-0. Kyle Poccia and Connor Lord fell in their third doubles spot, while Quinn Northrop and Eston Fowler played closely with USJ's top doubles team, but fell 6-4, seeing the Blue Jays come away with the opening 1-0 lead in the match. 

It was all Golden Bears from there, seeing Western New England bounce back in singles play to claim victory. Colby Esposito took a victory in the top singles spot for WNE after a retirement from USJ put the first point on the board for the Golden Bears. Michel Abizaid Nunez earned a win in the fifth spot for Western New England, coming away with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Kyle Poccia took his sixth singles spot in straights, coming up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Western New England went ahead 4-1 in the match to claim victory after Eston Fowler took the fourth sweep of the match for the Golden Bears, winning 6-4, 6-4 in the third singles spot. A pair of matches went the distance on Thursday afternoon, with Nolan Jermain's fifth singles spot needing three sets. Jermain opened the first set with a 7-5 win before dropping a 6-3 decision, forcing a third set. In the third, Jermain couldn't overcome his opponent, falling 10-8, as USJ took the win to grab their second point of the match. To cap off the afternoon, Quinn Northrop fell in the opening set of his second singles position match. The WNE sophomore bounced back for a 6-3 victory in the second set to force a match-deciding set. There, Northrop swept his opponent on a 6-0 score and came up with a victory, capping off Western New England's victory, which finalized at 5-2, defeating the Blue Jays for the first time in program history.
