Rodriguez Launches 100th Hit And Leads Golden Bears To Another Conference Doubleheader Sweep

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 11, 2026) – The Golden Bears were at home for doubleheader action with the Hawks of the University of Hartford. The Golden Bears would put eleven runs on the board between the two games and pick up another doubleheader sweep. Marley Rodriguez stole the day with her 100th career hit in game two.
Game One:
Score:
  • Western New England: 5
  • University of Hartford: 3
How it Happened:
First Inning:
  • Hartford got the game started quickly, as Alyssa Edwards grounded out to second base but drove home Alina Weaver, who drew a walk to start the game. The Hawks led 1-0.
  • The Golden Bears saw their first two batters go down before starting a rally. However, they could not get a run home, and WNE trailed by one after the first.
Second Inning:
  • The second saw Kane keep the Hawks at one run, but the Golden Bears found their bats in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Shea McDaniel got on base thanks to an error, and Marley Rodriguez made the Hawks pay. A two-run homerun was blasted over the left field fence, and WNE took a 2-1 lead into the third.
Third Inning:
  • Kane and the Golden Bear defense kept the Hawks silent in the third with a double play. WNE would take advantage of another two-out hit to drive runs home. It was another home run, and this time it was Katelyn Bailey, who sent the ball sailing over the right-center field fence, and WNE led 5-1.
Fourth Inning:
  • The fourth inning was relatively quiet. Only one batter from both teams combined got on base, and the score stayed at 5-1.
Fifth Inning:
  • The fifth inning saw a similar result, as one batter from each team reached base. Again, no extra runs were scored, and WNE remained in the lead by four runs.
Sixth Inning:
  • The Hawks would get back on the scoreboard for the first time since the first inning with their first batter. Alyssa Edwards slapped a shot around the right field foul pole, and Hartford's deficit was three.
  • Hartford had two in scoring position, with one out, but could not gain another run, and Kane kept the score at 5-2. WNE would then load the bases but could not extend their lead going into the seventh, and the Hawks had three outs to get at least three runs.
Seventh Inning:
  • The first batter got on base for the Hawks, and then, after a stolen base and an error from the Golden Bears, Eryn Coyle would score, and the Hawks cut the lead to 5-3. However, that is where the score would stay as Kane got the final two outs to end game one with the win.
Inside the Diamond:
  • The Golden Bears took game one, 5-3.
  • The Golden Bears had five batters get hits, with Katherine Brooks and Riley Kane hitting doubles.
  • Marley Rodrigues had a two-run homerun, and Katelyn Bailey hit a three-run homerun for WNE.
  • Five separate Hawks also had a hit in the game.
  • Riley Kane earned the win for WNE, giving up five hits and three earned runs in seven innings, with one strikeout.
Game Two:
Score:
  • Western New England: 6
  • University of Hartford: 5
How it Happened:
First Inning:
  • Game two saw an opposite start from game one. The Hawks were stifled in the first inning, and the Golden Bears earned the first run of the game. Katherine Brooks singled down the left field line, driving home Marley Rodriguez to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Rodriguez got on base via a leadoff double. A hit which proved to be her 100th career hit as a Golden Bear!
Second Inning:
  • The second saw the Hawks load the bases with two outs, but WNE's pitcher, Brianna Cardona, would get out of the inning. The Hawks and Ella Zobel sat the Golden Bears down in order in the bottom of the second to keep the score stuck at 1-0.
Third Inning:
  • After getting Katrina Baran on base early in the third, Alyssa Edwards launched a home run deep over the right field fence to send the Hawks into the lead, 2-1. The Hawks had runners on first and third with two outs after that, but could not capitalize.
  • WNE would try to get those runs back in the bottom of the third, but Zobel would strand the runners on second and third.
Fourth Inning:
  • The fourth inning saw Sophia Keays enter the game for WNE as the pitcher. Keays let up a single to start the inning before that runner was thrown out by Angelees Carrasquillo when trying to steal second base. Keays struck out the next batter and got the following one out, too.
  • The bottom of the inning saw Ava Barnhart reach first on an error with no outs. Carrasquillo would go home on the error and tie the game 2-2. Then, with one out and the bases loaded, Katherine Brooks popped out, but it brought Alyssa Ferriouolo home, and WNE led 3-2.
  • That was not the end of it, though. Riley Kane singled, scoring Barnhart, and Payton McDaniel doubled when pinch-hitting, scoring Kane and Rodriguez. WNE led 6-2 after the fourth.
Fifth Inning:
  • The Hawks got two runs back in the fifth. Anita Farkash hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field, scoring Alyssa Edwards, and Adelie Beebe scored when an error was made trying to catch Lucy Lembo stealing second. WNE's lead was 6-4 after the fifth as WNE was retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
Sixth Inning:
  • Both teams got runners on base in the sixth, but neither could score on the new pitchers that had entered the game. Kaylin Heffern entered for WNE at the end of the fifth, and Carly Mayhood entered in the sixth with one out.
Seventh Inning:
  • The final chance for the Hawks saw Hartford show fight. Eryn Coyle would hit a sacrifice fly with one out to score Gia Miccio, who got in scoring position because of a double.
  • Heffern would get the final out a batter later, and WNE would sweep the Hawks with a 6-5 win in game two, thanks in large part to Heffern's save.
Inside the Diamond:
  • The Golden Bears won the second contest, 6-5.
  • Marley Rodriguez led the Golden Bears by going 2-for-2, with a double and two walks. Rodriguez picked up her 100th career Golden Bear hit.
  • Seven separate Golden Bears had a hit in the second game. Katherine Brooks and Payton McDaniel each had two RBIs.
  • Alyssa Edwards, Adelie Beebe, and Gia Miccio each had two-hit days for the Hawks.
  • Sophia Keays earned the win for WNE, pitching 1.2 innings in relief, letting up two runs and three hits, striking out two batters.
  • Kaylin Heffern earned the save, pitching 2.1 innings, letting up one run and three hits. Heffern also collected one strikeout.
