SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 29, 2026) – Western New England men's tennis junior
Michel Abizaid Nunez has been named to the Conference of New England Community Service Team, becoming just the second representative from the program to receive the newest conference award.
The Conference of New England Community Service Team honors one student-athlete per conference institution who demonstrates a commitment to their community. Each student-athlete was nominated and selected by their head coach. Abizaid Nunez, a native of Alvaro Obregon, Mexico City, becomes the second international student-athlete in program history to receive honors, joining WNE men's basketball's Oscar Morales (Barcelona, Spain). Abizaid Nunez is a big advocate for community service in his hometown, assisting with the purchase of meals and food, such as rice, eggs, bread, chicken, beans, milk, and more, and delivering items to the elderly. Abizaid Nunez serves as a caregiver to those in need. Additionally, the WNE junior is involved in his church community, organizing and supporting toy drives and clothing donation efforts.
Abizaid Nunez had a successful season on the courts this past season for the Golden Bears, coming away with eight wins, including a 5-4 record in Conference of New England play. Abizaid Nunez also won five matches this season in doubles play, serving as a staple for WNE in the top spot all season long.
