Baseball Can’t Overcome Early Deficit, Fall 6-3 At Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. (April 9, 2026) – The Western New England baseball team dropped a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon to the Lyons of Wheaton College, as Wheaton scored three runs in the opening two innings, downing the Golden Bears by a final score of 6-3.

Records:
  • Western New England: 10-15
  • Wheaton College (Mass.): 15-6
How it Happened:

First Inning:
  • Leo Paragarino led off the top of the first inning with a single back up the middle of the field as the Golden Bears looked to stop their losing streak. Paragarino stole second, but Western New England couldn't string along any hits, going down in order following.
  • Wheaton scored in the bottom of the first inning off Lucas Kamoen when Brayden Lewis picked up a triple, followed by an RBI groundout from Collin Reilly, putting the hosting Lyons in front, 1-0.
Second Inning:
  • WNE left one aboard in the second, while Wheaton added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-0 lead. Logan Downey opened the inning with a single for Wheaton, followed by an error on the infield to put a pair of runners on base. A wild pitch from Kamoen put the runners in scoring position, while a groundout and a sacrifice fly gave the Lyons a 3-0 lead. Jacob Dudley made his collegiate debut in the inning on the mound, giving up a hit, but getting the last out of the inning.
Third Inning:
  • Western New England scored in the top of the third inning to pick up a run for the first time in the game. Jack Gamache led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a Corey Kilroy RBI single, who walked off Wheaton last season on a solo home run at home. Kilroy's single on Thursday put the Golden Bears on the scoreboard, trailing 3-1.
  • Kyle Welsh entered in the game in the bottom of the third, erasing a leadoff walk with a pickoff at first while collecting a pair of strikeouts to set the Lyons down in order in the inning.
Fourth Inning:
  • Western New England added another run in the top of the fourth inning to get back within one of Wheaton. Alex Grenier reached on an infield throwing error with one out, followed by two singles, one from Antonio Galizia and another from Jack Gamache, who brought home the run in Grenier, giving the Golden Bears their second run of the game, trailing 3-2.
  • Wheaton put two runners on base on Welsh when Logan Downey doubled and Ray Toth took a walk, but the WNE sophomore picked up a strikeout and a flyout to get out of the inning.
Sixth Inning:
  • The Golden Bears left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning after Greg Nivison drew a nine-pitch walk, followed by a single from Antonio Galizia, while Leo Paragarino took a walk himself, but the Golden Bears couldn't even the score.
  • Wheaton made the Golden Bears pay for the error in the bottom of the frame as Connor Slifer, who made his season debut on the mound in the game, got the first two outs before allowing a single, stolen base, walk, and RBI single from Wheaton's Evan Jones, giving the Lyons a 4-2 lead.
Eighth Inning:
  • Western New England threatened in the top of the eighth for runs after Greg Nivison led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but a pair of strikeouts left Nivison stranded, keeping Wheaton ahead by two.
  • The Lyons added two more runs in the bottom of the inning as a pair of infield grounders tripped up the Golden Bears, allowing Wheaton to take a 6-2 lead after eight.
Ninth Inning:
  • Tyler Kornacki had the last run of the game for Western New England, coming home on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Waterbury, but it would not be enough, as the Golden Bears dropped another contest, falling 6-3.
Inside the Lines:
  • Antonio Galizia and Jack Gamache had a pair of hits for WNE in the game to lead the offense. Seven of nine Golden Bears had at least one hit in the game.
