Box Score 2 REVERE, Mass. (May 2, 2026) – The WNE softball program ended their regular season at Suffolk University on Saturday. They would play extra innings in game one after the Golden Bears tied the game at two in the top of the seventh. However, the Rams would score two in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk it off. The Golden Bears responded with six extra-base hits and eight runs in game two to split the doubleheader.
Game One:
Score: Final/9
- Western New England: 4
- Suffolk University: 5
How it Happened:
First Inning:
- Game one got off to a slow start, with both pitchers picking up at least one strikeout in the opening inning. Riley Kane got two.
Second Inning:
- Cynthia Rucinski struck three Golden Bears out in the second before a wild pitch from Kane saw Abby Barnaby score. Catherine Carignan would score too after a throwing error from WNE. Suffolk led 2-0.
Third Inning:
- Both teams got a runner into scoring position in the third inning. However, both pitchers dealt with the remaining batters and kept the score where it was.
Fourth and Fifth Innings:
- The fourth and fifth innings were relatively quiet, as well. A single for each team occurred in the fourth, but the pitchers went through the inning, one, two, three in the fifth.
Sixth Inning:
- The sixth saw Rucinski deal with WNE in the top of the inning. The bottom of the inning saw Suffolk get a runner into scoring position before Kane got out of the inning via a ground out.
Seventh Inning:
- Down to their last three outs, the Golden Bears started the inning with a walk and an Angelees Carrasquillo double. A sacrifice fly ball from Ava Barnhart then drove Keira Czarkowski home. WNE trailed 2-1 with two outs.
- Then, a fielding error saw Shea McDaniel get on base, and Carrasquillo scored. WNE had tied the game at two.
- Kane dealt with the Rams in the bottom of the inning, moving the game to extra innings.
Eighth Inning:
- Both teams grabbed a run in the eighth inning. Payton McDaniel drove Marley Rodriguez by grounding out for WNE. Then, Julia Mills bunted into a fielder's choice to drive Ava Lanza home. The score was 3-3.
Ninth Inning:
- A Katelyn Bailey triple down the left field line drove Mia Marigliano home to give WNE a 4-3 lead.
- However, a wild pitch brought Roma Braid home before a Kendal Heyman single drove Claire Basaldua through home and gave Suffolk the 5-4 win in extra innings.
Inside the Diamond:
- Suffolk defeated WNE, 5-4, in extra innings in game one.
- Ava Lanza led the Rams with a 2-for-4 performance.
- Suffolk saw four batters get a hit in game one.
- Angelees Carrasquillo went 2-for-3, with two doubles in game one to lead WNE from the plate.
- Cynthia Rucinski earned Suffolk the win by pitching nine innings, striking out six batters, and only allowing one earned run.

- Suffolk University: 2
How it Happened:
First Inning:
- The first inning saw the Rams start right where they left off in game one. WNE could not get the opening run in the top of the inning. Suffolk would, though.
- Catherine Carignan singled through the middle of the infield, driving Ava Lanza and Jolie Quintana home. Suffolk led 2-0 after the first.
Second and Third Innings:
- Both teams landed runners on base thanks to singles in the second. However, no runs would come until the third, when Riley Kane slapped a double into left field. Marley Rodriguez scored, and WNE trailed 2-1. Kaylin Heffern kept the Rams quiet in the bottom of the third.
Fourth Inning:
Fifth Inning:
- Riley Kane tripled to start the fifth, but would get thrown out at home on a fielder's choice during the following at-bat. Neither team would get another hit after that in the fifth.
Sixth Inning:
- Katelyn Bailey would steal home in the top of the sixth inning to extend WNE's lead. Then, three batters later, Kane drew a walk, and Shea McDaniel scored. WNE led 6-2.
- For the fourth inning in a row, Heffern blanked the Rams to keep the four-run lead entering the seventh.
Seventh Inning:
- With two outs, Shea McDaniel slapped a double, scoring Katelyn Bailey. Then, Marley Rodriguez singled, driving McDaniel home. WNE's lead was up to six runs after the top of the seventh inning.
- The Rams did get one runner on base thanks to a Carignan double, but Heffern would get the final two outs of the game after that, and WNE won game two, 8-2.
Inside the Diamond:
- WNE won game two, 8-2, to split the doubleheader with the Rams.
- Marley Rodriguez led the Golden Bears with a 4-for-5 performance, with a double and two RBIs.
- Riley Kane went 2-for-3, with a walk, a double, and a triple.
- Six Golden Bears had at least one hit, with four having two or more hits. Angelees Carrasquillo, Katelyn Bailey, and Shea McDaniel all had extra-base hits, as well.
- Catherine Carignan led the Rams in game two by going 2-for-3 with a double and both Suffolk RBIs.
- Kaylin Heffern earned the win with a seven-inning, three-hit, no-earned runs, three-strikeout performance in the pitching circle.

The Golden Bears will move into postseason play, as they will host the winner of the first-round matchup between the University of Hartford and the Wentworth Institute of Technology. WNE's game will be at Golden Bear Softball Park on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at approximately 3:30 PM.
