Scyocurka's Brace The Difference As Golden Bears Rally Past Keene State, 3-1

KEENE, N.H. (September 22, 2026) – Three unanswered goals in an 11-minute span during the second half lifted the Western New England University women's soccer team to a 3-1 comeback victory over Keene State College on Tuesday evening at the Owl Athletic Complex. Sophia Scyocurka scored twice, including the eventual game-winner, before Abigail Alicandro added an insurance goal just 1:13 later to complete the Golden Bears' second-half surge.

How It Happened:

First Half

  • Keene State generated the first scoring opportunity of the contest in the ninth minute. After an Elizabeth Tschudin shot and ensuing corner kick, Kaylee Cormier converted a chance set up by Claire Halligan at 8:40 to give the Owls an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Ainsley Napolitano kept the deficit at one three minutes later, turning aside an Emily O'Connell attempt for her first save of the evening. Western New England began finding its way into the attacking third as the half progressed, with Liza Pinette and Ava Borecki registering the Golden Bears' first two shots before WNE earned its second corner of the half in the 29th minute.
  • The Golden Bears produced their best chances of the opening half over the final 16 minutes. Meghan Hartnett put an attempt on target in the 30th minute, forcing Keene State goalkeeper Michaela DiCicco into a save. Julia Dufresne tested DiCicco again three minutes later, but the Owls maintained their one-goal advantage.
  • Hailey Wachter created one final opportunity before the break, putting a shot on goal at 43:33 that DiCicco stopped. Keene State carried its 1-0 lead into halftime after holding a 7-5 advantage in shots, though Western New England placed three of its five first-half attempts on target.

Second Half

  • Western New England came out of halftime on the front foot, and the response arrived less than six minutes into the second half. Following a Golden Bears corner, Tess Chevalier set up Scyocurka, who found the back of the net at 50:36 to draw WNE even at 1-1.
  • The Golden Bears continued to apply pressure after the equalizer. Hartnett and Scyocurka each registered attempts over the next six minutes before Chevalier put a shot on goal that DiCicco turned aside at 56:27.
  • Scyocurka struck again at 60:21, scoring her second goal in less than 10 minutes to give Western New England its first lead of the night, 2-1. The Golden Bears needed just 73 seconds to double the advantage. Stephanie McKenna connected with Alicandro, who scored at 61:34 to push WNE ahead 3-1.
  • With the two-goal cushion established, Western New England continued creating opportunities. Emma Forde recorded an attempt in the 66th minute before Chevalier forced another DiCicco save at 69:16. The Golden Bears finished with nine second-half shots after recording five over the opening 45 minutes.
  • Keene State made a late push in search of a response, but Adara Boucher protected the lead after taking over in goal to begin the second half. Boucher stopped Kylie Rapoza in the 70th minute and denied Cormier in the 78th as the Golden Bears kept the Owls off the scoreboard for the entire second half to secure the 3-1 victory.
  • Western New England and Keene State each finished with 14 shots and four corner kicks, but the Golden Bears put eight attempts on goal compared with four for the Owls. WNE also generated a 9-7 advantage in second-half shots while scoring on three of those opportunities.
  • The victory extends Western New England's winning streak against Keene State to seven matches. The Owls continue to hold a 14-7-0 advantage in the all-time series.

Key Performances:

  • Scyocurka led the Golden Bears' comeback with two goals on four shots, placing two attempts on target. Her equalizer at 50:36 erased the halftime deficit before her second goal at 60:21 put Western New England ahead for good.
  • Chevalier recorded the assist on Scyocurka's first goal and finished with two shots on goal.
  • Alicandro added Western New England's third goal on her lone shot of the match, while McKenna picked up the assist.
  • In goal, Napolitano made one save during the opening half before Boucher played the final 45 minutes and stopped both shots she faced to preserve the Golden Bears' second-half lead.
