Cougars Score Twice In The Second Half To Knock Off The Golden Bears 3-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 5, 2026) – Clark University scored twice in the second half to pull away from Western New England University, 3-1, Saturday morning at Suprenant Field. The Cougars improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Golden Bears fell to 0-2.

How It Happened:

First Half

  • Western New England created the first opportunities of the morning, with Meghan Hartnett and Tess Chevalier each putting a shot toward the Clark end in the opening two minutes. The Cougars responded with pressure of their own, recording their first shot in the fourth minute before Solimar Rivera forced WNE goalkeeper Ainsley Napolitano into a save at 5:19.
  • Rivera's early pressure ultimately helped Clark break through moments later. At 5:19, Rivera found the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage, with Georgia Louis providing the assist.
  • Clark continued to apply pressure after taking the lead, finishing the opening half with nine shots compared to seven for the Golden Bears. Napolitano kept WNE within one, making five saves during the first 45 minutes.
  • Western New England continued to look for an equalizer late in the half. Natalia Estrada Rangel put a shot on target with just over a minute remaining, but Clark goalkeeper Ava Lepro made the save to preserve the Cougars' 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Second Half

  • Clark extended its advantage early in the second half. At 56:04, Louis doubled the Cougars' lead, scoring off assists from Rivera and Selene Hammad to make it a 2-0 contest.
  • The Golden Bears continued to generate opportunities as the half progressed, but Clark's defense and goalkeeper Gabrielle Huryn kept WNE off the scoreboard. Huryn made three saves after entering at halftime, helping the Cougars maintain their two-goal cushion.
  • Clark added another goal at 75:01 when Caroline Knecht scored off an assist from Hammad, pushing the lead to 3-0 with just under 15 minutes remaining.
  • Western New England answered less than five minutes later. Hartnett set up Sophia Scyocurka, who found the back of the net at 79:17 to put the Golden Bears on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • The Golden Bears continued to press for another goal, but Clark held off the late push to secure the victory.

Key Performances:

  • Rivera led Clark's attack with a goal and an assist while recording five shots on goal among her six total attempts. Louis added a goal and an assist, while Hammad contributed two assists in the Cougars' three-goal effort.
  • For Western New England, Scyocurka scored the Golden Bears' lone goal, while Hartnett finished with three shots on goal and an assist. Napolitano made eight saves in goal for WNE.
  • Clark finished with a 20-15 advantage in shots and put 11 attempts on target compared to six for the Golden Bears. WNE held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks, while Clark made five saves and WNE finished with eight.
  • The result moves the all-time series to 0-1-1 in favor of Clark University.
