SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Curry College scored five touchdowns on plays covering more than 20 yards for a 47-16 victory over Western New England College in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division contest.
The Colonels (7-1, 5-1) totaled 536 yards as sophomore quarterbacks Kevin Holleran (Quincy, MA) and Denis Hill (Pembroke, MA) combined to complete 16-of-23 passes for 257 yards and three scores.
After a scoreless first quarter, Curry took a 7-0 lead on a nine-yard run by junior Brandon Benoit (Stamford, CT) (11 carries, 60 yards, 2 touchdowns).
WNEC (4-4, 2-3) pulled within 7-3 when senior Loren Estabrook (Sharon, NH) kicked a 27-yard field goal at the 2:42 mark. Holleran then fired a 21-yard touchdown to Dick with 28 seconds left to give the Colonels a 13-3 half-time advantage.
After Curry went ahead 19-3, WNEC came back right back going 65 yards on seven plays capped by a 16-yard run by senior running back Mike Laroche (Berlin, CT) to get within 19-9 at the 10:31 mark of the third period.
Laroche finished with 106 yards on 29 carries. This was Laroche's third 100-yard game of the season and ninth of his career.
Curry scored the next four touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter on a 56-yard run by sophomore running back Patrick Leonard (Londonderry, NH) (16 carries, 174 yards) and a 69-yard punt return by sophomore Charles Gibbs (Providence, RI).
WNEC freshman backup quarterback Pat Murphy (Kensington, NH) ran 57 yards for his first collegiate touchdown with 1:01 left in the game to complete the scoring.
Senior Dayne Poirot (Cheshire, MA) averaged 40.4 yards for five punts with a long of 51. Freshman Vitaly Dzhenzherukha (Chicopee, MA) returned three kickoffs for 65 yards with a long of 34.
