Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Just when Western New England College needed a lift, two underclassmen provided a spark that got the Golden Bears back on the winning track.
Freshman halfback Jordan Capitanio (Torrington, CT) rushed for a career high 186 yards on 30 carries and tied a school record with four touchdowns, and sophomore wide receiver Kevin Miculcy (Greenwich, CT) set another team mark for catches in a season, as Western New England College posted a 45-8 victory over visiting Framingham State College Saturday at Golden Bear Stadium.
Capitanio, who had 184 yards and three scores in a four-point loss at MIT (31-27) last week, scored on runs of 4, 9, 2, and 4 yards as the Golden Bears raised their record to 2-4 with the non division New England Football Conference (NEFC) victory. He tallied the game’s first three touchdowns as Western New England College took a 21-0 lead at half-time.
Capitanio tied the school mark set three times by Marvin Langley in 2000 and 2001 and twice by Mike Laroche last season.
Freshman James Farrell (East Longmeadow, MA) kicked a 22-yard field goal at the 2:15 mark of the third period before Capitanio scored his final touchdown with 46 seconds left in the quarter to give the Golden Bears a 31-0 lead.
Miculcy, meanwhile, caught five passes for 60 yards to set a school record for receptions in a season (46), breaking the old mark of 45 set by Keith Fagan in 1988 and Brian King in 1993.
One of Miculcy's receptions was a crafty 34-yard score on a screen pass from junior quarterback Jon Tallerico (Port Chester, NY) that put Western New England College ahead 38-0 with 13:08 left in the fourth quarter.
Framingham (2-4) scored on a 40-yard run by freshman running back Alex Nagle (Dover, MA) exactly two minutes later. He finished with 54 yards on six carries.
The Golden Bears’ final touchdown came on a 25-yard run by sophomore quarterback Pat Murphy (Kensington, NH) with 5:12 remaining in the contest. Murphy was 10-of-17 passing for 76 yards and one interception.
Western New England College compiled a season high 418 yards while holding the Rams to only 123 yards.
The Golden Bears intercepted five passes, including two by junior free safety Jim Kantany (East Longmeadow, MA). Junior linebacker Matt Guaragna (Port Chester, NY) had 10 tackles.
