Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Junior Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) scored three goals and senior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) tallied twice as top-seeded Western New England College defeated fourth-seeded Castleton State 6-1 Tuesday in a semifinal round game of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Field Hockey Tournament.
WNEC will host third-seeded and defending champion Maine-Farmington (a 3-2 overtime winner over second-seeded Simmons) in a rematch of last year’s title game (won by UMF 2-1) on Saturday.
Katz gave the Golden Bears (18-4) an early 1-0 lead just 2:59 into the contest. It was the 100th career point for Katz who joined Jameson as the only players in the program’s 25-year history to reach the milestone. Jameson now has 108 career points while Katz has 102.
Castleton (8-9) tied the contest on a goal by freshman Carolyn Griggs (Lincoln, VT) at the 12:35 mark before Western New England College took the lead for good on Jameson’s first goal with 6:07 remaining in the half.
The Spartans almost tied the game with approximately 15 minutes left, but senior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) made a great save off a penalty corner shot. Junior Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) then added an insurance goal less than two minutes later before Katz scored again with 11:20 left in the contest. Jameson then fired home her last two shots in a 33-second span with a little less than 10 minutes remaining to complete the scoring.
Brown finished with 10 saves while freshman Trisha Clark (East Dover, VT) made 15 stops for the Spartans.
