ITHACA, N.Y. - A great season came to a disappointing end Sunday when third-seeded Western New England College suffered an 8-0 loss to fifth-seeded Ithaca College in a game ended in the fifth inning because of the mercy rule at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship.
Western New England College tied a season high with five errors that led to four unearned runs. The Golden Bears made four of those miscues in the fourth inning when the Bombers scored six runs to put the game away.
Junior shortstop Kristy Kehoss (Cheshire, CT) had the only hit for Western New England College, a leadoff single in the first. Senior second base player Sarah Moisao (Harwinton, CT) was then safe on a sacrifice fielder's choice. Both runners advanced to second and third with two outs, but couldn't score.
Moisao and Kehoss made the All-Regional Team after hitting .454 and .364, respectively, in the tournament.
Senior Jackie Shedlock (Oak Ridge, NY) allowed five hits in three and a third innings striking out two and walking three. She ended her final season with an impressive 23-5 mark, the second highest win total in school history.
Western New England College, which finished third among six teams at the regional, established another school record with a 39-6 record for the most victories in the program's 27-year history.
Ithaca completed a big day at its home field by defeating sixth-seeded King's (Pa.) 8-0 in a six-inning mercy-rule contest to set up another meeting with the Monarchs on Monday for the regional championship crown and a trip to the NCAA Division III World Series.
