Western New England College ties Connecticut College

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - After playing its first five matches on the road, Western New England College's women's soccer team opened its home season with a 0-0 overtime tie against Connecticut College in a non-league match Wednesday at Suprenant Field.

This was the second straight tie and third of the season for the Golden Bears who have an unusual 1-2-3 record.

Both teams played stellar defense in this game with junior goalie Marisa Sullivan (Halesite, NY) making seven saves for Western New England College and senior Kate Simmons stopping five shots for Connecticut College.

Each side had a couple of chances to score during the contest, but couldn't put one away.

WNEC junior defender Ashley St. John (Barre, VT) hit the crossbar with a header off a long throw-in from classmate Kristin Thornton (Bedford, NH) with 1:30 remaining in regulation. The Golden Bears hit the post again on a shot by freshman Emily VanLare (Farmington, NY) in the first minute of overtime to keep the game scoreless.

The Camels (0-1-1) had an excellent opportunity in the final minute of the second overtime, but the shot was cleared in front of the net.
