Matt Maynard and Deon Thomas lead Golden Bears past Emerson

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Western New England College ran its winning streak to three games with a convincing 80-50 victory over Emerson Monday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game played at Pine Manor College.

Freshman guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) led the Golden Bears with 18 points after making 7-of-9 shots from the field and all four free throws. He also pulled down seven rebounds.

Junior forward Deon Thomas (Albany, NY) contributed 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the second straight game that tied his career high. He was 7-of-11 from the floor and had two blocks. Junior center Malik Champlain (Norwich, CT) also played one of his best games of the season by contributing 10 points and eight rebounds.

Senior forward Jason Cardinal (Ashaway, RI) chipped in with nine points, seven assists, six rebounds, and two blocks.

Western New England College raced to a 41-20 half-time lead after shooting 50.0% in the opening 20 minutes. The Golden Bears also dominated the boards by a 56-29 margin.

Last year Emerson defeated WNEC twice during the regular season by the scores of  57-46 and 66-64 in overtime. 

Western New England College is now 5-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference while Emerson drops to 4-8 and 3-2.
