Box Score BENNINGTON, Vt. - Senior guard Jon Godbout (Bristol, CT) scored 27 points while junior center Malik Champlain (Norwich, CT) and freshman guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) each had 13 points, but it wasn't enough as Western New England College suffered a 72-69 loss at Southern Vermont Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game.
The Golden Bears led 40-33 at half-time before the Mountaineers staged their comeback with four players scoring in double figures. Junior forward Doug Hammonds led SVC with 17 points, including two free throws with three seconds remaining.
Western New England College shot 53.6% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, but made only 34.5% of its shots in the second half. Freshman forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) added seven points while senior forward Jason Cardinal (Ashaway, RI) pulled down a team high six rebounds.
The Golden Bears, who had their five-game winning snapped in the process, are now 7-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference. The Mountaineers improve to 5-10 and 4-4 after ending a three-game skid.
