Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Second-seeded Western New England College broke open a close game with four goals in the second half to take a 5-1 decision over seventh-seeded Albertus Magnus College in a quarterfinal round match of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Soccer Tournament Sunday (Oct. 29) at windy Suprenant field.
The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead after the opening stanza when sophomore Dan Hare (Staatsburg, NY) headed home a shot off a corner kick from senior Michael Zawislak (Newark, DE) in the 14th minute.
Western New England College then scored twice in an 11:11 span when junior Dan Lawrence (Easthampton, MA) tallied his first goal of the season with an assist from Zawislak in the 61st minute. Senior Evan Heymann (Ipswich, MA) upped the margin to 3-0 a short time later with an assist from freshman Marco Gomes (Ludlow, MA) who recorded his first collegiate point.
Albertus Magnus got on the board when sophomore Derek Delucia (Hamden, CT) fired home a shot with the assist going to freshman Rob Saldibar (North Haven, CT) in the 82nd minute.
The Golden Bears put the game away for good when sophomore Brian Dill (Portland, CT) scored just 1:50 later with an assist from freshman Nick Zarka (Farmington, CT). Senior Rob Ostrem (West Islip, NY) added the final goal in the 89th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Alfredo Perez (Norwalk, CT) finished with 11 saves for the Falcons who end their season with a 5-13-1 record.
Western New England College (12-5-2) will host a semifinal round match of the GNAC Tournament on Wednesday (Nov. 1)Â against an opponent to be announced.
