SMITHFIELD, R.I. â€" Junior Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH) scored two goals with an assist to lead fourth-seeded Western New England College women’s soccer team to a 4-2 victory over top-seeded Johnson & Wales University in a semifinal round game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 31) at Bryant College.

Senior Kristin Thornton (Bedford, NH) added a goal and assist for the Golden Bears who advanced to the tournament championship match for the eighth consecutive year.

Western New England College led 1-0 at half-time and extended its lead to 3-0 before the Wildcats tallied a pair of goals.

Sophomore Melissa DaCruz (Ludlow, MA) secured the win with a key insurance goal in the 80th minute.

Senior Jen Woishnis (Chicopee, MA) contributed two assists for the Golden Bears while senior goalkeeper Marisa Sullivan (Halesite, NY) had four saves, including one big stop in the second half.

This was a re-match of last year’s GNAC Tournament championship match won by Johnson & Wales 1-0.

Senior Katie Cherecwich(Howell, NJ) had both the goals for the Wildcats who finish their season with a 9-9-2 record.

The Golden Bears (10-7-2) will meet either seventh-seeded Simmons or third-seeded Saint Joseph (Connecticut) in the title game match on Saturday. Those two squads face one another on Wednesday (Nov. 1) in West Hartford, Connecticut.
