UMass Dartmouth rolls to easy win over Western New England College in NEFC Boyd contest

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Sophomore quarterback Alex Garro (Mattapoisett, MA) ran for one touchdown and passed for another, and freshman defensive back Bryan Howard (Somerset, MA) returned a punt 62 yards for another score as visiting UMass Dartmouth rolled to an easy 37-7 victory over Western New England College in a New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division contest Saturday (Oct. 7) before 1,100 fans at Golden Bear Stadium.

The win was the second in a row for the Corsairs who went over the .500 mark at 3-2 (2-1 in the Boyd Division).

UMass Dartmouth scored on its first possession when Garro (3-for-4, 62 yards) tossed a six-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Jameson Humphries (Longmeadow, MA) at the 9:12 mark.

The Corsairs used a couple of big plays to explode for 23 points in the second stanza. Sophomore running back J.T. Harold (Andover, MA) ran 51 yards for a score 90 seconds into the period following an interception by sophomore cornerback Jordan Wright (Brookline, MA). Harold finished with a game high 136 yards on 15 carries (9.1 avg.)

The Golden Bears (2-3, 0-3 Boyd) drove to the visitors 32 on their next possession, but fumbled, and the Corsairs then went 65 yards on seven plays that ended when Garro ran two yards for a score with 6:45 left before half-time.

Western New England College was forced to punt on its next drive and Howard returned the kick 62 yards to make the score 27-0 with 4:21 left. Freshman place-kicker George Vasiliadis (Worcester, MA) drilled a 42-yard field goal with 19 seconds to give the Corsairs a 30-0 advantage at intermission.

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Walsh (New Bedford, MA) (4-for-6, 54 yards) fired a 25-yard scoring strike to big junior tight end Charles Gryska (Medfield, MA) with four minutes left in the third quarter for a 37-0 lead.

Western New England College then drove to the UMass Dartmouth one after freshman quarterback Brian Walz (Groton, CT) (9-for-19, 114 yards) hit junior split end Eric Smolin (Westford, MA) for a 33-yard gain. The Corsairs, however, stopped four running plays to end the drive.

The Golden Bears averted the shutout when freshman running back Mike Bernstein (Washingtonville, NY) scored on a three-yard run to cap a 79-yard, nine-play drive with 4:48 left in the contest.

UMass Dartmouth finished with 427 yards while holding Western New England College to 241 yards.

The Corsairs forced six turnovers (four interceptions) and controlled the ball for 36 minutes, 47 seconds. Sophomore linebacker Matt Lamoureux (Salem, CT) had nine tackles.

Western New England College junior split end Kevin Miculcy (Greenwich, CT) had a game high seven receptions for 77 yards and moved into a tie for second place on the school’s all-time reception list (116) with Mike Roach.
