Box Score AMHERST, Mass. â€" Junior forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) had a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead Western New England College to an exciting 75-73 overtime victory over Westfield State in the second day of competition at the Pioneer Valley Men’s Hoop Classic at Amherst College’s LeFrak Gymnasium.
The 30 points was a career high for Bayne who made 13-of-24 shots from the floor, including a three-pointer.
Junior guard Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY) added 12 points off the bench, including the game-winning baseline jumper with 20 seconds remaining in the extra session that broke a 73-73 tie.
Westfield State had a final shot, but senior forward Gavin Illangakoon (Ellington, CT) (19 points) had his three-point attempt bounce off the rim at the buzzer.
Senior center Malik Champlain (Norwich, CT) also had 12 points as Western New England College improved its record to 2-4.
Junior guard Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) and freshman guard Chris DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) each added seven points while sophomore forward Kyle Fredette (Wallingford, VT) contributed six points and eight rebounds.
Western New England College shot 57.1% in the opening half to take a 38-34 lead and finished shooting 47.6% from the field. The Golden Bears struggled from the charity line making only 12-of-23 shots (52.2%).
Senior forward Curtis Gadles (Pembroke, MA) had a game high 27 points for Westfield State (5-1) who lost its first game of the season.
