Western New England College rallies for win over Suffolk in GNAC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore guard Jennifer Dabrowski (Plainville, CT) scored a game high 16 points, including two free throws with three seconds remaining, as third-seeded Western New England College rallied for a 52-47 victory over sixth-seeded Suffolk University in a quarterfinal round game of the 2006 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament.

The win was the 10th straight for the Golden Bears (20-5) who tied the school record for wins set previously on three occasions, the last time in 2002.

Western New England College will play second-seeded Norwich (a 55-46 winner over seventh-seeded Simmons) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel College in Boston.

Junior guard Christine Aldrich (Montpelier, VT) and sophomore guard Tiffany DeRosa (Hamden, CT) both added 10 points as Western New England College fought back from a five-point deficit in the final nine minutes of the contest. DeRosa also made a key steal in the final minute as the Golden Bears scored the last five points of the game.

Senior center Lisa Masella (Newtown, CT) tallied all eight of her points in the second half and made a lay-up with 21 seconds left that broke a 47-47 tie. She also pulled down eight rebounds.

Suffolk (15-11) took a 24-18 lead at the break and held a 35-30 advantage when sophomore guard Katlyn Klecha (Fairfield, CT) made a basket at the 9:27 mark.

The Golden Bears came back and went ahead 43-41 when Dabrowski drained a three-pointer with 2:52 left. Two free throws by DeRosa upped the margin to four (45-41) with 1:46 remaining.

Klecha hit a long three-pointer to bring the Rams within one at 45-44 at the 1:27 mark.

Dabrowski made two charity shots with 56 seconds remaining for a three-point lead (47-44) before junior guard Lauren Burns (Dorchester, MA) drilled another trey to knot the score (47-47) with 44 seconds left.

Burns led Suffolk with 14 points while Klecha finished with 12 points. Junior guard Jenn Fogg (Stonington, CT) contributed 10 points and nine rebounds in a solid performance.

Western New England College, who defeated Suffolk 54-50 at home during the regular season, held a 41-33 advantage off the boards gaining several key offensive rebounds in the closing minutes.

In other games Wednesday, top-seeded Emmanuel defeated eighth-seeded Emerson 70-41 and fifth-seeded Saint Joseph, Connecticut upset fourth-seeded Johnson & Wales 66-53.
