Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior guard Jon Godbout (Bristol, CT) scored 19 points and freshman guard Matt Maynard (Paterson, NJ) added 17 points to lead Western New England College to a 74-52 victory over visiting Southern Vermont College Tuesday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
The Golden Bears moved back over the .500 mark at 11-10 (9-5 GNAC) after winning for the third time in their last four outings.
Western New England College led 28-15 at halftime after Southern Vermont shot only 24.1% (7-for-29) from the field.
The Mountaineers (7-13, 6-7 GNAC) pulled within seven at 33-26 following a lay-up by sophomore guard Halisi Tambuzi (Mesa, AZ) with 16:40 left in the game.
The Golden Bears then went on a 14-6 run for a 47-32 advantage capped by a three-pointer by Maynard at the 12:04 mark. Southern Vermont got no closer than 12 down the stretch.
Junior forward Douglas Hammond (Brooklyn, NY) led SVC with 16 points and eight rebounds while senior guard Tim Bonnett (Laurel, MD) contributed 14 points and seven boards. Sophomore forward Oriol Morer (Barcelona, Spain) chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds off the bench.ÂÂ
The Mountaineers shot 60.0% (15-for-25) in the second half to finish with a respectable 40.7% effort from the field.
Western New England College also received a solid performance from senior guard Jeremy Sternstein (Ithaca, NY) who had eight points, six assists, and five steals. Junior center Malik Champlain (Norwich, CT) pulled down a game high 10 rebounds. The Golden Bears shot 45.2% from the field, including 55.2% (16-for-29) in the second half.
