AMHERST, Mass. - Amherst College scored the first five goals of the game and coasted to a 19-3 victory over visiting Western New England College in a first round game of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Wednesday at Hitchcock Field.
The Jeffs (13-3) took a 1-0 lead just 53 seconds into the contest and led 5-0 before the Golden Bears roared to life scoring a pair of goals in a five-second span.
Freshman Michelle Thompson (Wilbraham, MA) made a nice move to the net and fired home the first WNEC goal at the 21:30 mark before junior Jess Vogel (Tonawanda, NY) raced downfield and scored on a quick shot to cut the margin to three.
Amherst, ranked sixth nationally, quickly re-grouped and tallied the next seven goals to take a 12-2 lead at intermission.
Western New England College scored its final goal when Vogel hit the back of the net with 14:38 left in the contest.
Freshman Amy Craig (Denver, CO) led Amherst with four goals while junior Lauren Dudley (Baltimore, MD) added three goals and an assist. Ten players scored goals for the Jeffs who had a 46-15 advantage in shots and 36-18 edge in ground balls.
The Golden Bears, who were playing in their third straight national tournament, finish their season with a 13-5 record.
Senior Alyson Nowell gets introduced for the final time against Amherst in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament. Nowell finished her outstanding career second on the school's all-time scoring list with 200 points (126 goals, 74 assists).
