Team effort lifts Western New England College past Mount Holyoke for first time since 1999

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" After losing some close games early in the season, the Western New England College field hockey team is now starting to win them.

Junior Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) had the game-winner at the 54-minute mark in the second half to lead the Golden Bears to a 1-0 victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College in a non-league contest Thursday afternoon (Setp. 21). Senior Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) had the assist on winning shot.

On Tuesday, Eggert scored the game winner and Jameson had the assist as WNEC edged Manhattanville 3-2 in overtime.

This was the fourth straight win (and third by a single goal) for coach Sarah Kelly’s squad who evens its record at 4-4.

Western New England College also snapped a seven-game losing streak to Mount Holyoke dating back to 1999 while avenging a pair of single goal defeats last year (2-1) and in 2004 (3-2 in overtime).

Junior goalkeeper Emilie Donka (White River Junction, VT) played a key role in the win with 15 saves, including nine in the second half.

Sophomore goalie Allie Walsh (Ann Arbor, MI) stopped five shots for the Lyons who lost for only the second time in five outings.
